PRINCIPAL'S REPORT
Dear Parents, Carers and Families
Caritas Launch
Our College community was very excited to host the Caritas 2020 Project Compassion Launch. Over 250 students and staff from Wollongong Diocesan schools gathered at St Benedict’s on Shrove Tuesday, the day before the start of Lent. The theme for this year’s Project Compassion is “Go Further Together”, which is about all of us working together to serve those who are disadvantaged, particularly those victims of the recent bushfires and drought, as well as other marginalised and disadvantaged communities.
After the Acknowledgement to Country from Isabella Ravino (Year 11) , Bishop Brian Mascord celebrated a beautiful liturgy, followed by addresses from Monica Ward, McCann Caritas Diocesan Director and Peter Hill, Director of Schools. A highlight of the Liturgy was the very moving performance of “How Great Thou Art” by our College Choir. It was also significant for us that students from St Justin’s were able to join with the St Benedict’s students in leading the liturgical prayers and reflections.
Our dedicated staff and talented students ensured the great success of this event. I would like to acknowledge Mrs Kimberley Logue for her outstanding organisation and coordination of this event. Special thanks to our College Captains, College Mission and Ministry Leaders, the College’s Year 11 Youth Ministry Leaders, our students who were greeters from Year 11 and Year 12, students who assisted in setting up, College Choir, Year 7, 10 and 11 Hospitality students and Year 6 Student Leaders from St Justin’s.
I would also like to thank and acknowledge Mrs Karen Earnshaw, Mrs Gwen Rumble, Mr Alan Jolly, Mrs Tracee Brown, Mr Brandon O’Donnell, Mrs Sara-Jane Castelli and Mrs Jenny Koryzma for their contribution, and Mr Peter Cremen who was the St Benedict’s parent representative.

International Womens Day
#EachforEqual #IWD2020
The message and theme for this year’s International Women’s day is “EachforEqual”. An equal world is an enabled world. Individually, we're all responsible for our own thoughts and actions - all day, every day. Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender equal world.” More information about International Women’s Day 2020 can be found at this web site;
https://www.internationalwomensday.com/Theme
At St Benedict’s we advocate for the importance of gender equality for every member of our community and highlight the ways that we can be supportive and value our different personalities and interests.
Our library has put on a great display of books to recognise International Women’s Day 2020. I hope our students take the opportunity to browse the many books in this display. I have showcased a couple of these titles below.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF MISSION AND VISION
LENT BEGINS
Have you thought? – An invitation
Lent is a season of invitation. It is an invitation to step into the desert with Jesus; to confront our own purpose and ministry and to renew our trust in God’s vision for the world and for us individually. Seen in this light, Lent is so much more than fasting from meat and giving up ice cream for a few weeks. The whole idea of fasting and sacrifice is an attempt to simplify our lives. Through simplifying our life and removing some of the daily distractions, we can share in the desert experience of Jesus and then truly celebrate the hope reborn in the Easter season.
Caritas Project Compassion Launch - Diocese of Wollongong
Our College was the host for the Caritas 2020 Launch on Tuesday 25 February 2020. We hosted over 250 students, teaching staff and CEO personnel from across the Wollongong diocese.
It was wonderful to have our Wollongong Bishop Brian Mascord lead the liturgy.
The ‘common good’ is one of the reasons why we gathered together. As one community to celebrate the launch of Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion appeal. Through Project Compassion, we are asked to acknowledge that we are all members of the one human family, all equally worthy of love, mercy and respect.
Project Compassion 2020 takes the theme of Global Community – GO FURTHER TOGETHER as we collectively aim to support the other to thrive in a union of love and compassion. And let’s do this together! We believe in the “two feet of justice”. Project Compassion provides us with the opportunity to support others, to meet their immediate and most basic needs. To have empathy for them and to GO FURTHER TOGETHER to support them.
Lent is a special time when we stop and think about how we all can play our part in God’s hope for a world that is fair and just for all. Pope Francis tells us that “lent is a time for drawing near to Christ,” preparing us for Easter when Jesus dies on the cross and rises from the dead.
Through this journey of the 40 days of Lent, we are given the chance to practice the three pillars of Lent. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Through the support we give to Project Compassion this Lent, we recognise our responsibilities as a Global Community, a community which helps to fight poverty, promote justice and uphold human dignity.
A huge thank you to our wonderful students and staff who assisted and enabled this event to be spectacular. We had students involved as readers, choir and music, welcomers and greeter and serving in hospitality. Our choir sang beautifully and left all present amazed with their version of ‘How Great Thou Art’.
A special thank you to Mr Karl Cremen for attending and being the Parent Representative he signed the Project Compassion covenant alongside Bishop Brian Mascord, our College Principal Kerrie Piatek, Director of Schools, Mr Peter Hill and with his daughter Grace Cremen (Year 11) who was the student signatory.
ASH WEDNESDAY LITURGIES - 26 February 2020
On Wednesday, the College commenced the season of Lent with Ash Wednesday liturgies in House groups. Thank You to Staff and Students who led and participated so reverently in the liturgies. Students had the opportunity to watch Busted Halo’s LENT in a 3 minute video clip -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xo1mjuy1NA0
I include a beautiful reflection written by our College Captain, Olivia Dowling on the Season of Lent:
Ash Wednesday is the first day of the Christian season of Lent, which is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
A couple of months ago most of us would have set some New Year's Resolutions for ourselves, whether that involved achieving something this year or changing certain habits. In a similar way, Lent is a time when we can give up or take up something in the hopes that will generate regrowth within ourselves and improve the lives of those around us.
We are called, as Christians and people striving towards the common good, to pray, act kindly, show humility and mercy, give up things that we enjoy and give to others, as we prepare to celebrate the great feast of Easter.
For forty days, we will accompany Jesus on his journey to Calvary. On this journey, we are encouraged to mirror Jesus in show mercy and unconditional love to others by partaking in acts of fasting, almsgiving and prayer.
Lent is a time of hope as we strive to renew our relationships with God and the people around us. During these forty days, let us take time to reflect on our own lives and seek forgiveness. This repentance and reflection will help lead us towards a more meaningful Easter, by inviting us to slow down and consider how we can impact the lives of others for the better.
These blessed ashes remind us that we all belong to God, preparing for Jesus’ death and resurrection together as a community. The ashes symbolise our need for renewal, change and growth. This year, the ashes come from communities across the Wollongong Diocese who have been devastated by the bushfires, representing the connection we all have to the sacred land of the Darawhal people and to each other.
The cross is a sign that reminds us that, just as Jesus gave himself up for humanity, we should make sacrifices and changes this Lenten season that can help others in need
PRAYERS
WE PRAY FOR KINDNESS
Lord, as we prepare ourselves to fully enter into the journey of Lent, help us to fast from hurting others through our words and actions. Help us to clothe ourselves with love and use kind words and practice kind actions.
We pray to the Lord.
ALL: Lord hear our prayer.
WE PRAY FOR GRATITUDE
Lord, as we prepare ourselves to fully enter into the journey of Lent, help us to fast from sadness and be filled with a sense of daily gratitude. Help us to count our blessings every day.
We pray to the Lord.
ALL: Lord hear our prayer.
WE PRAY FOR PATIENCE
Lord, as we prepare ourselves to fully enter into the journey of Lent, help us to fast from anger and be filled with patience for ourselves but particularly for our families, friends, colleagues and school communities. In doing so, help us to build a better world.
We pray to the Lord.
ALL: Lord hear our prayer.
WE PRAY FOR HOPE
Lord, as we prepare ourselves to fully enter into the journey of Lent, help us to fast from worries, complaints, pressures and pessimism and be people filled with hope and simplicity, who are prayerful and who have trust in You.
We pray to the Lord.
ALL: Lord hear our prayer.
WE PRAY FOR COMPASSION FOR OTHERS
Lord, as we prepare ourselves to fully enter into the journey of Lent, help us to care for and be compassionate to each other. It has been a hard start to the year and we pray for our communities who have experienced loss. We pray that we can stand beside them and journey with them as they rebuild their lives.
Year 8 Reflection Day - Mt Shoenstatt
The Year 8 Reflection Day was held on Friday 28 February 2020 at Mt Schoenstatt in Mulgoa. A most beautiful location. Mount Schoenstatt, with the Shrine as its spiritual centre, is a place of pilgrimage where love for Christ and his mother, Mary, are deeply rooted. Schoenstatt means ‘beautiful place’ and it is here that people from all walks of life find moments of peace and tranquillity on their journey. They are refreshed and renewed and find the possibility to deepen their commitment to Christ.
A perfect place to hold the Year 8 Reflection Day with the theme of "Finding the Hero Within". It was an opportunity for Year 8 to uncover and discuss, the qualities and values of heroes. In fact, the values discussed link perfectly to the Benedictine Values of Community, Neighbour and Hospitality. Year 8 came to a realisation, the values of HEROES, are in fact values and qualities they (we) have ourselves. Sometimes in our lives, we are afraid of showing our inner hero. It is with the help of our peers before us today, where we are able to feel confident in ourselves and be encouraged to achieve all that we desire to. It is with the help and guidance of God where we are reminded that we are special and all have our own unique gifts and talents, which we are to embrace and share with the world.
Student Reflection - Daniel Lal
Year 8 reflection day was a great way to open up to the good in all of us. It was also a great way to socialise and relax with our fellow classmates. The group activities were fantastic, they allowed us all to communicate with each other and brainstorm our thoughts about what a hero is to us. The venue was also lovely and peaceful. Overall I have to say thank you to the staff for the organisation for such a wonderful day for Year 8.
Year 10 Reflection Day - ‘Just’ Leadership (Caritas Australia)
Caritas Australia runs Just Leadership Days to engage students with social justice issues, and to encourage them to be just leaders. The aims of Just Leadership Days are to:
identify local, national and global issues of justice.
actively engage students in a process that helps them recognise they have the resources, the power and the responsibility to work for change.
identify what constitutes good leadership and why it's important to be a leader in this domain.
explore the qualities of leadership through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching.
to resource and empower student leaders to promote Project Compassion, Caritas Australia's annual fundraising and awareness-raising campaign, in their schools
Through hands-on activities and discussion, Year 10 learned global facts and explored the work of Caritas Australia.
They also developed leadership skills to equip them not only to lead Caritas Australia events, but also to encourage fellow students to be aware of their unequal world, to recognise the inter-dependence of humanity, and to work within their local and global communities to create a fairer and more sustainable world.
First Sunday of Lent - 1 March 2020
Shirley, 36, is an indigenous Manide woman living in a remote province in the Philippines. Shirley was struggling to support her family and keep their children in school. She faced regular discrimination and disadvantage, limiting her family’s access to food, education, employment and healthcare. With Caritas Australia’s support, Shirley trained to become an indigenous health worker. She has learnt to supplement her income and is able to feed her family. The program has also empowered Shirley to send her children to school.
Please donate to Project Compassion 2020 to help people like Shirley, and her children gain confidence and respect within their community.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Last Thursday we held our College Swimming Carnival at Camden Pools. Due to the size of the venue and the limitations of shelter provided, we are only able to have competitors attend, however, it was a great day and it was fantastic to see the talent we have amongst us. There were a few records broken on the day and lots of support towards each other. Age Champions and the winning house will be announced in the coming weeks.
Thank you to all staff and parents who came on the day to help and support the students.
CCC TRIATHLON
Congratulations to Madelyn and Patrick M. who competed in the CCC Triathlon on Wednesday 26 February. This is a fierce competition and both students did the school and their family proud.
A massive congratulations to Madelyn who came 1st overall on the day. Triathlon is a sport that requires lots of dedication and self-motivation, and Madelyn sure does have this in her. Madelyn has been training for triathlons for the past 5 years and each year her hardwork and passion for the sport improves. In 2016, Madelyn placed 92nd at the CCC Triathlon, fast forward four years and this year she finished 1st; it is fair to say that Madelyn is deserving of this result.
We are super proud of you Madelyn and wish you all the best of luck at Nationals in March.
DIO TOUCH FOOTBALL
On Monday 24 February, students from our College participated in the annual Boys Touch Football Gala Day. After being postponed due to the weather, the 35 students were eager to get down to Thomas Dalton Park and compete against the other schools. It was a fun-filled day with some fierce competition, however, our boys were just as competitive and won a few games and drew some. The boys had a 'never say die' attitude and persisted in their efforts to chase down the other teams. Special mention to our Year 12 students who attended and were great role models to the younger players.
Following the Boys' Touch football, on Monday 2 March the girls had the opportunity to also show off their touch football skills. Battling the heat, and playing a total of nine games, the girls remained positive, even in the face of defeat and always put in their best effort. They demonstrated outstanding teamwork and encouraged each other along the way and should be proud of how much they improved as the carnival progressed.
Thanks to Mr Morris, Mr Wisbey, Mr Flannery, Mr Limbrey, Mrs Pereira and Miss Brown for coaching the boys and girls providing them with great knowledge and skill.

U Turn the Wheel hosted by Rotary was a successful and valuable day for Year 11. Speakers from Rotary, NRMA Youth Services, Brain Injury Survivors and Police officers came to share information and personal stories about Road safety and the impact of the choices we make on our roads.
Rotary commented many times about the way the students in Year 11 were totally engaged with their presentations. The students responded with maturity and compassion and hopefully they will make informed and responsible choices once they begin their own driving journey.
