Keeping Kids and Staff Healthy!
Measures Escondido school has in place to keep students healthy.
The school has provided:
Purell hand sanitizer dispensers for each classroom
Purell dispensers for the lunch carts
Teachers encourage students to wash their hands frequently (before/after each recess break, after using a tissue to wipe their nose or sneeze/cough)
Custodians are using a special cleaning solution on all "high touch" surfaces (door handles, desks, sink handles) twice a day.

As a reminder, if your child is sick, please keep them home from school. To help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, including the coronavirus and flu, follow these important tips:
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Stay home when you are sick.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
Individuals with chronic health issues and/or individuals experiencing severe symptoms should be evaluated by a medical professional.
Book of The Month Read Aloud
Last week Mr. DiCosmo and I visited classrooms as part a Book of the Month read-aloud series. We read Be Kind, by Pat Zietlow Miller to K-2 classes and The Bad Seed, by Jory John to 3-5 classes. After reading to the class, we lead the class through a short discussion or activity and leave the book as a gift to the classroom. We are excited to continue visiting each class to read a new title each month throughout the rest of the school year.
This month we are celebrating the love of reading because March is extra special. Not only is it National Reading Month, but on March 2 schools across the nation will be celebrating Read Across America Day. Please be sure to visit the Book Fair this week and join us on Wednesday night for the Family Reading Night in the MP room.

DreamBox Learning K-8 Digital Math Program
We are happy to share with you that the PAUSD is providing access to DreamBox Learning, a K-8 digital math program, to all Escondido students this year. Students have access to this digital math program at school and at home. Please see the attached instructions to set up your access at home. Your child will need to use their PAUSD login information to use the program from a device at home. Many primary grade teachers have already provided you with your child’s login information through Friday Folders. Most students in grades 3-5 already know their login. DreamBox Learning provides math lessons in Spanish and English. Your classroom teacher has set the appropriate language of instruction for your child.
It is exciting to have a tool that allows students to not only receive targeted lessons at their level but extending beyond their current grade level. We hope that you find this extra resource beneficial for your child.

Attendance Counts
What’s an Excused vs Not Excused absence? Illness, doctor’s appointments, bereavement, and certain religious exercises are excused absences. Please see PAUSD board policy for the full list. All other reasons are not considered excused.
Unexcused Absences Unexcused absences include absences not included above and/or not cleared with your child’s school administration. Absences that do not qualify as excused as defined in Education Code have the potential to accrue toward truancy. Education Code §48260 provides that a student is truant if that student is:
- Absent from school without a valid excuse three full days in one school year, or
- Tardy or absent for more than any 30-minute period during the school day
- Without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, or any combination thereof. (Education Code, 48260, subd. (a)).
If Your Child is Absent…
Please call the attendance line at 650-856-1337 x1. If the office staff does not answer you will be prompted to press 1 and leave a message. Please provide your child’s name, relationship to student, and reason for absence. You may also send us an email message escondidoattendance@pausd.org
