Message from Principal
The first six weeks' progress report will be emailed to you this week. You can check your child's grades and attendance through the Parent Portal. You may access Parent Portal via this link, https://www.wacoisd.org/Page/4222. If you have any questions about your child's grades, please contact the teacher. If you haven't joined the Remind group for your child's class, please do so as soon as possible. Teachers are sharing important information on Remind.
We are in the process of updating our Hillcrest PDS website. Please check it periodically to see new information, staff information, and upcoming events. Here is our website https://www.wacoisd.org/hillcrest
A few reminders:
1. Beginning Sept. 6th, if your child arrives after 7:50am, parents will have to come inside to sign them in. Also if you arrive after 4:00pm to pick up your child, you will have to come inside to sign them out. To show Hillcrest Best, students are here and on time!
2. If your child brings a lunch and needs milk from the cafeteria, it costs $0.50. Please send money with your child to purchase milk if needed. Water is available for all students.
3. Parents/guardians: You may drop off a lunch from a restaurant/fast food for your child at his/her lunch time. We cannot allow visitors to stay for lunch due to limited seating. We know how special it can be for a child to receive a special lunch so we want to make that available.
Thank you for sharing your children with us. It is going to be a great year at Hillcrest PDS!

2nd Grade
This Week in 2nd Grade:
RLA - [Phonics] This week we are learning all about the “Sneaky E” rule! When “e” is the last letter in a word, and the syllable before it has only 1 vowel (a,e,i,o,u), the first vowel is long (says it’s name) and the “e” on the end is silent. We will have a spelling test on Friday! [Reading] Learning how to monitor comprehension while reading. A great way to encourage your child to do this at home is by asking them the reading comprehension questions in their book baggies. [Writing] Practicing going through the writing process by writing letters to firefighters in honor of Patriot’s Day (9/11) and reviewing nouns.
Spelling Words:
tap
tape
fin

cap

Bonus: Patriot
Math - comparing numbers with greater/ less than, and equal to signs and ordering numbers from least to greatest
Science - Exploring freshwater and Saltwater characteristics
Social Studies - Learning about timelines, and completing one for This Very Tree (a book about 9/11 that we are reading in RLA this week)

3rd Grade
The 3rd Grade Team sure missed our Muggles, Sailors, and Ranchers over this weekend! It is the beginning of September, which means everything is about to start moving VERY fast! September will bring around MANY chances for our 3rd graders to “show what they know”, which will be many great things. Please help us remind the students that we have to put in the work in order to get the outcome. That can look like continuous participation in class or taking the time to listen to our teachers without talking. Again the information from the parent meeting is in the link below if you would like to view it. Please note that there are MANY differences between 2nd grade and 3rd grade work with a focus on independence. If you have any questions please let us know.
What’s going on in the classroom?
Math: We have our first Math District test on Wednesday, September 7. We will then move into number-lines and rounding. We will be re-hitting this topic ALL year!
Reading: We are continuing our work on Author’s Purpose and craft. If you’re asking your students about what they’re learning or reading please have them give you text evidence. Have them give you specific examples from their day.
Writing: We’ve been working on nouns and cursive, but this week we start working on some ACTION!! That’s right, verbs!!!
Social Studies: Science week…
Science: Rapid land changes…. Any ideas? We’ll be looking at landslides, earthquakes, and volcanoes!
