Amazon Fundraiser
Will you be shopping online this holiday season? Raise funds for ISB without spending a penny more than you would spend anyway. It’s simple to support ISB by linking to Amazon through our webpage and generate a donation to our school without increasing your purchase costs. Amazon will donate up to 10% of your purchase to ISB. Donations are used to provide IB Exam scholarships for our seniors and support student activities and clubs. Since 2013 we have raised over $3,800 thanks to your generous support. Please let your family and friends know they can also support ISB by using this link!
Save the Date: February 27 - Guest Speaker
Thanks to a grant from FRISB, ISB is excited to welcome Dr. Doreen Dodgen Magee on Thursday, February 27 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. Dr. Dodgen Magee is a psychologist, author, and speaker whose energetic, fast paced, research based talks inform and inspire. Her work addresses living healthy, embodied lives from a strong sense of self and a passion for encouraging connected community.
Aloha Host Family Needed
A nonprofit organization called ETC (Education, Travel and Culture) has a 15-yr old boy from China in 10th grade at Aloha High School who needs a new host family. The family must either live in AHS boundary or have a child at AHS. He is very easy-going and friendly. His English is not perfect but it is pretty good. He can easily communicate, understands most things he hears, and is eager to learn more English words and expressions. Please see flyer below for additional information.
This activity is not sponsored or endorsed by the Beaverton School District or the International School of Beaverton.
IB Corner
The IB Middle Years Program (MYP) has two projects that students participate in, to demonstrate the skills they have learned during the MYP.
ISB sophomores complete the Personal Project as a culminating research project through their personal project class. Students choose a topic that interests them, choose a global context that helps provide their projects with a clear and specific focus, research this topic, and create a product that demonstrates their learning on that topic.
The Personal Project:
takes approximately 25-30 hours of study over an extended period of approximately 6 months,
uses many of the approaches to learning skills have been learned in classes,
is assessed against four criteria and the grade receives .25 credits on the high school transcript,
includes a process journal, a project report, and a product or outcome.
The Community Project is a group project completed during the 8th grade, through advisory class, and is focused on community and service. This project gives students a chance to develop an awareness of needs in their community and address those needs through service learning.
The Community Project:
takes approximately 15 hours of time to complete over a two month period; 5 hours of which is completed in advisory classes,
uses approaches to learning skills that have been learned in classes,
is assessed against four criteria which is reported through advisory classes.
includes a proposal for action, a process journal, a take action project, and a presentation about their experience and learning.
Learner Profile of the Month
This month, the learner profile focus is on being caring.
Definition: Students will develop empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. They have a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.
Students, reflect on the questions below:
Do you use kind words, help people without being asked, and try to always show you care about others?
Think of a time when someone was caring towards you. How did that make you feel?
How could you show someone that you are caring?
This month, try to practice random acts of kindness. Small actions, like holding the door for someone, smiling and saying hello, or helping when you see a need, shows that you are aware of others and want to be of service to them.
Digital Citizenship Resources
As we approach winter break, students will have more opportunities for screen time and digital interaction. We’ve developed a digital citizenship resource webpage to share with families.
Digital citizenship refers to using technology safely and responsibly. The District has been teaching digital citizenship to students for the past several years. In our continued work, we are now offering families information and resources to support safe and responsible digital practices.
Topics on the page include digital health and wellness, media literacy, and online privacy and safety. You can view the webpage at www.beaverton.k12.or.us./digital-citizenship, or simply go to our website and enter “digital citizenship” in the search tool.
Open Enrollment for the 2020-2021 School Year
The Beaverton School District will offer Open Enrollment for students living within the BSD service area for the 2020-21 school year at the schools listed below.
Applications for Open Enrollment will be available in English and Spanish at each school and at the Administration Center, 16550 SW Merlo Rd., and will be accepted from Monday, December 9, 2019 through Tuesday, January 21, 2020 prior to 2:00 p.m. Students may only apply to two schools. Applications to more than two (2) buildings will be denied. Completed applications should be returned to the school for which the student is applying.
Elementary Schools (# of open slots):
Errol Hassell (20)
Fir Grove (30)
Kinnaman (15)
Sexton Mountain (10)
Terra Linda (12)
Middle Schools: No slots available at middle school
High Schools (# of open slots):
Beaverton HS (40)
Southridge HS (40)
Principals will make the final determination as to what grade levels will be filled with these Open Enrollment slots.
There are some important factors families must consider when applying for a 2020-21 Open Enrollment transfer:
Student must maintain attendance at 92% or greater; no more than one minor suspension per academic year; no suspension greater than five days, and no expulsions.
Transportation to the new school is the responsibility of the family. Buses do not travel from the resident school to the open enrollment school; however, occasionally the student may live close to the attendance boundary of the open enrollment school. In this case, parents must submit a written request by completing a “Transportation Service Request" form.
Approval is for the duration of the current school level only (i.e., elementary, middle or high school).
There is no guarantee of sibling applications being approved.
Commitment to attend any school should be for the entire academic year.
A lottery system may have to be implemented if there are more applications than allocations available.
Copies of the completed applications will be distributed by the receiving school principal, pending a letter or conversation with the parent/guardian of the student.
Parents will be informed of the decisions by the principal of the school applied to within one week after the conclusion of the open enrollment period. Parents will need to confirm acceptance at that time.
Contact your school if you have any questions regarding the process.

Community Engagement – Career Presentation from Laika
ISB high school and eighth grade students had a chance to attend a career presentation from Brian Elliot, Rigging and Practical Effects Lead for Laika. Laika is an American stop-motion animation studio specializing in feature films. The studio is best known for it’s Academy Award nominated stop-motion feature films Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Missing Link.
Students had a chance to learn more about the process of creating a stop-motion animation film and the diversity of skills and education needed for careers in the film industry. After the presentation students had an opportunity to see some of the Laika puppets and enjoy a screening of Kubo and the Two Strings.
Food was catered by Tortilleria y Tienda De Leon, an Ecotrust Farm to School vendor partner. Learn more about the Ecotrust Farm to School program here. https://ecotrust.org/project/farm-to-school/
