The College Essay
Hello seniors and families:
Here is a PowerPoint that provides an overview of the college application essay, including what it is, why it is important, tips on how to write it and how to get help with it at MHS. Please take time to look through it and if you have any questions or concerns, reach out to the School Counseling Office and/or to H Hardie, English Department Head for assistance.
MHS Club Fees
We encourage all of our students to be active members of our MHS community. One of the ways to do this is to be involved in a club or sport at MHS. This is just a sampling of some of the things we have to offer. You can always refer to our Daily Bulletin for meeting times and locations for any clubs at MHS!
Now that our clubs are up and running club fees are now due. Please use our online payment system Unibank linked here (or on the MPS homepage) to pay all club fees. The cost is $25 per club with a cap of $50 per student per year. Thank you for your prompt payment of club fees.
MHS Picture Retakes - Monday, October 23rd
Students who were absent and had not preordered will receive a card with the codes and instructions for placing an order. These cards will be distributed by the school.
Students who were absent on original picture day but had placed a preorder will have that order fulfilled with the retake day photo.
Students who received pictures but are requesting retakes, please return the entire original package to the photographer on retake day. Write the student’s name and the reason for the retake on the envelope and a new package will be ordered using the retake day photo.
9th Grade Day of Service
During the SAT/PSAT day for grades 10-12 at MHS last week, 9th grade students had the opportunity for a day of service around Milton. Many 9th graders volunteered at our elementary schools helping out in classrooms. Another group of students(Cam Gormley, Aidan Stoddard, Sam Rukstalis, Bobby Beato, Will Mannix, Jules Repko, Nate Turner and Nicky Power) spent the day at the Blue Hill Observatory, clearing out areas near the tower. Students were really excited about the opportunity to see inside of the observatory, including the barometric thermometers, and getting to eat lunch on top of the weather observation tower.
Science Labs on Fast Foods
All Biology students will be completing a lab during the month of October where they are testing for organic molecules in fast food kids meals. The students must work collaboratively to use indicators to determine if Carbohydrates(sugars and starches), Fats and Proteins are present in fast food kids meals.

Athletics Updates
Lots of great highlights for MHS Athletics these days!
- MHS Varsity Boys Soccer hosted Youth Soccer this week as they celebrated their Seniors. Although Milton lost a tough one to Brookline 3-1, it was a fun night overall for Milton and MHS Soccer.
- MHS Swim and Dive won against Braintree on Senior Night, finishing 8-1 this season!
- As of October 17, five Milton High School Fall Varsity teams (Field Hockey, Football, Boys and Girls Soccer, Volleyball) are ranked in the top 32 of the MIAA Power Rankings. These last two weeks of the season will bring some important games as our teams look to qualify for the MIAA Tournament. In particular, the Football team is currently ranked number 1 in Division 3 and the Girls Soccer team remains in the top 15 rankings for Division 2. Six MHS golfers will participate in the MIAA DII North Golf Sectional at Stowe Acres Tuesday, Oct 24 (Johnny Gillooly, Ethan Nowak, Luke Naughton, Rogan Pater, Devin Prince and Jack Naugton). Later this month, our Cheer, Cross Country and Swim teams will look to qualify for States. Roll 'Cats!
- Thank you to all who shared the pictures and videos below. Have athletic pictures to share? Send them to pictures@miltonps.org.
SEL Screener
Milton Public Schools understands the importance of measuring student social emotional learning for all students with assessments that are up-to-date, effective and easy to implement. Capturing the social and emotional health of our students with short, research-based assessments is one way to determine how we, as a district, can best provide support to students - whether that be specific SEL programming, curriculum enhancements, or individualized approaches.
Though our commitment to support our students in their SEL development has not changed, what is changing is our assessment platform - from Intellispark to Performance Matters. The type of questions that will be presented to students on the SEL assessment remains the same (link to secondary assessment). These questions are drawn from an open source item bank developed by a collaboration between the Washoe County School District, the Collaborative for Academic and Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), and the University of Illinois at Chicago. For more information about this item bank, please visit WCSD’s Social and Emotional Competency Assessment.
Your student is invited to participate in the SEL assessment on Performance Matters because they are a student in Milton Public Schools. Your students teacher or school counselor will be using the SEL assessment on Performance Matters, our new district assessment and data platform. We anticipate rolling out this assessment in the fall and in the spring. Participation is voluntary. Your decision whether or not to allow your student to participate will not affect your or their current or future relations with the school or teachers. If you do not want your student to participate, please let us know by completing this form and returning it to Principal Cahill @ kcahill@miltonps.org by the end of the day TODAY. Thank you!
Kids Trail Run
Come support the Milton High School Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams at our Kids Trail Run at Cunningham Park on Sunday, October 22nd. There are different races for students in K-8th grades and it is a great opportunity to experience cross country! Registration is $10/person and starts at 10am on race day. We hope to see you there!
Free and Reduced Lunch - Apply Now
Even though Massachusetts is now permanently serving every student a free lunch and breakfast,we still encourage families to apply for the Free and Reduced lunch program, as there are additional benefits. Benefits do not roll over each year, so if you have qualified or think you may qualify, fill out an application on the Milton Food Service page where both electronic and paper applications are available. If you qualify for any state of Massachusetts assistance programs you likely will qualify for Free and Reduced lunch programs.
MFE Monster Dash
Register now for the Monster Dash on Sunday, October 29 at Cunningham Hall! The MFE is also in need of volunteers to work a shift registering runners on Saturday and Sunday. Please see the sign up if you can help out.
The Milton Monster Dash is organized by the Milton Foundation for Education (MFE), a non-profit organization that funds innovative programs and opportunities for Milton Public School students that are beyond the reach of the Milton Public School's budget. The Monster Dash is held in loving memory of Sam Cichello and supports science enrichment in MPS. All details are here.
