Florence was the birth place of the renaissance, In 1425 the population was around 60,000 people. The success of the city was put upon the shoulders of 12 guilds. These guilds regulated trade, which lead the city to its greatness. Because this city wasn't on a port like venice, they couldn't rely on sea trade. The unit of currency in Florence soon became the currency all over Europe. It was called the Florin. The city itself was self governed, but because they were all very good with politics and philosophy they made it just fine. Soon instead of having any government system at all, the guilds started to become their own sort of government. They even had a meeting place in their own building. In this building the 5000 or more guild members could vote and do other governmental things.
