Dear Boone Meadow Families –
Shocking moments: Over the course of this past week, I’ve been afforded a few “shocking moments.”
1. I was at my brother-in-law’s house, stringing white lights along their wooded drive for my sister-in-law’s upcoming wedding reception. My brother-in-law, Mike, plugged in the lights which resulted in me completing and tripping a circuit due to one exposed/broken light bulb. I felt the electricity shoot up my left arm and into my chest. Wow! That was exciting! I hopped off the aluminum ladder rather quickly, and was reminded of my youthful days on the family farm when I would get too close to the electric fence that was purposed to keep the cows from wandering down the road and into the neighbor’s garden.
2. School safety – On Monday and Tuesday of this week, I attended the Indiana School Safety Specialists trainings in downtown Indy with several other ZCS administrators. During my time at the conference, I heard from survivors and family members from Georgia Tech and Sandy Hook. These are examples of a few shocking moments that continue to impact school safety and procedures to this day. As I reflect, I am reminded of our superb safety partners and a community of families that place students’ safety and responsibilities in highest priority. Thank you for your continued cooperation with our safety procedures and protocols. The little things make a difference.
3. Camp Tecumseh – (This serves as one of many examples, and I don’t know why this surprises me – it happens over and over throughout each year.) I am floored by the outpouring of support to create unique and special learning opportunities for our students. Our teachers put in countless hours outside the school day to bring unique experiences to fruition. PTO dollars fund transportation fees, and for the Camp T trip, more than 20 adults took time off work to chaperone and lead sessions for this adventure. Your generosity is noted and greatly appreciated! Once again, it makes more of a difference than you may realize.
On another note, we launch into a new month. With that, we turn our September lifeline focus to “effort” and “integrity” which help us grow stronger. As you know, life doesn’t always give us an “easy” button, and through challenge and reflection, we become stronger. At BME, we purposefully don’t make everything too easy for the students. Sure, we celebrate success and what students are doing well. However, we try to strike balance through stretching and nurturing our learners as thinkers and problem-solvers. That’s where the real world changers can be found.
With this long weekend, I hope you are met with some time to refresh and relax with your family and friends.
Your partner in education,
Tom

Changes to School Visitor Check-Ins at ZCS
As the 16-17 school year begins, please be aware that we will be using a new visitor management system known as SafeVisitor. SafeVisitor is a 30-45 second check-in process that cross references against all national sex offender registries and prints a visitor badge. Please be prepared to scan a government issued ID (Driver License) when arriving to campus as a visitor or volunteer. The printed badge should be visible at all times while in the building. Thank you!
Please note: Full background checks are still required field trips. Full background checks cost $15.95 and take at least 7-10 days to process. Limited background checks are still required for lunch visits, volunteering in a supervised area, etc.
**Bullying Video**
All volunteers in our district are also required to complete the bullying module, consisting of a short video and a digital signature as proof of watching the video. This video must be watched for either level of volunteer (Full or Limited). Please click here to visit the BRAVO/Volunteers page where all of these items can be completed.
Smart 911
Boone County has shifted from NIXLE to SMART911. This is a free service that allows you to receive emergency notifications from the county which may include severe weather warnings and traffic alerts. The program will ask for optional personal information that could be used in the event of an emergency situation in your home. Boone County citizens are encouraged to create their Safety Profile with Smart911 today. To create a safety profile and sign up for updates, go to www.smart911.com
