March 2023 (Invitation to Curriculum Counsel)
We would like to invite each district's curriculum director to attend along with their Science Liaison. We do have limited space so we will have to limit this invitation to one addiitonal person at this time. We will be hosting a training for principal leaders in June.
To register for this immersive experience please complete this form. Lunch will be provided. This session will be hosted at the Indiana Conservation District located at 435 Hamill Rd, Indiana, PA 15701.
If you have any questions please email me at lrodgers@iu28.org.
NGSX PLANS
January 2023 Session
We started the day with a phenomena-based question of "Why did a railroad tanker implode?" Individually and then in a group, teachers modeled what they believed happened to the tanker. Participants broke into small groups and tested some of their theories using soda cans, water, a hotplate and a bin of water.
The group also heard from Travis Barta, principal at Apollo-Ridge Middle School, about the success of their science program changes and how it positively affected their ELA scores.
To end the day, participants worked to modify a lesson to make it phenomena-based and 3-dimensional. They shared their ideas with their grade-band peers.
Our next session will be March 29th at the Indiana County Conservation District.
December 2022 Session
We are looking forward to our next sessions on January 12th and March 29th.
Some wonderful quotes from participants: "Feeling a part of a group and getting a chance to view the standards with others to hear their thoughts was so valuable" and "Being able to discuss these topics with fellow teachers from around the area."
October 2022 Session
Members of ARIN's PennSEL team also lead teachers through a 3-dimensional lesson that was very engaging.
What's this about?
The new Pennsylvania standards are built upon the National Research Council’s (NRC’s) A Framework for K-12 Science Education (The Framework). Like The Framework, the Pennsylvania Integrated Standards for Science, Environment, Ecology, Technology and Engineering (Grades K-5) are based on current research in student learning and take a threedimensional approach that integrates disciplinary core ideas, practices in science and engineering and crosscutting concepts into a coherent set of expectations for student learning that builds progressively across grades. Together, these elementary school standards and the companion standards for middle and high school—the Pennsylvania Integrated Standards for Science, Environment and Ecology (Grades 6-12)—provide the basis for K-12 science education in Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania Integrated Standards for Science, Environment, Ecology, Technology and Engineering (Grades K-5) guide the elementary-level study of the natural and human-made world through inquiry, problem-solving, critical thinking and authentic exploration. The integration of these disciplines in the elementary standards highlights the interconnectedness of scientific study, the integral relationship between humans and the environment and the importance of integrating the teaching and learning of science, engineering and technology. Presenting the standards for science, environment, ecology, technology and engineering together in a single document makes them more accessible for elementary teachers when developing innovative STEM curricula that integrate related content.
