Chartwell School: The Bulldog Bark
Special New Year Update
January 4, 2021
Important Updates from Kate Mulligan
Dear Chartwell Families,
Happy New Year! I hope your holiday break was rejuvenating and you are beginning the new year healthy and rested. There is a lot of very important information in this communication - please read it thoroughly.
As I shared before the break, Monterey County Health Officer Dr. Edward Moreno issued a stay at home order for Monterey County, placing new restrictions on the county to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The order went into effect at 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 13 and is in effect until 6:00 a.m. on January 11.
Due to continued Community Spread, we will continue on Distance Learning for all cohorts.
Our new projected on-campus start date is Tuesday, January 19.
We are all looking forward to being back on campus, but the safety of your children and our faculty, staff, and their families has to be our priority. Please join me and Danielle Patterson for our weekly Parent Tea this Wednesday, January 6 at 5:00 p.m. when we will go into more detail about the decision-making process and our outlook for January (more information below.)
Remember that we start virtual classes for all students on Wednesday, January 6. Watch for updates from Chartwell or your teachers as we enter the new year.
Thank you for your continued patience and resilience as we move through these next few weeks of uncertainty. We are grateful for the community you have helped us build at Chartwell, and we look forward to the time (soon!) we can be together on our beautiful campus again.
All the best,
Kate
New Date! Student and Family COVID Testing: Friday, January 8
Our apologies for the confusion and the inability to schedule testing for tomorrow. Please see the new date to schedule an appointment is Friday, January 8. Instructions and forms are included below. (If you were able to schedule an appointment for tomorrow, please keep that appointment. There is no need to reschedule.)
On Friday, January 8, 2021, Chartwell is hosting a COVID-19 testing clinic onsite. All school personnel will be tested, and although not required, we are strongly encouraging students and Chartwell families to be tested as well before we return to on-campus learning. All Chartwell family members may sign-up for testing as space allows.
If you are interested in taking advantage of this voluntary testing opportunity, you must read the instructions below, sign-up for an appointment, and complete all of the paperwork to bring with you on Friday.
We are pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to our Chartwell students and families.

The Chartwell Family Pledge
Returning to live school is not without risk and as a community, we must work together to foster the safety of our students, parents, faculty and staff. We are asking our families to adhere to certain community guidelines while we slowly and safely return to campus. Please review the below “pledge” and uphold the following commitments on a daily basis:
Conduct a health and symptom screening before your child leaves home each day. Keep your child home when they are sick or exhibiting symptoms of general illness. If the temperature reads 100.4 or above, keep your child at home for the day. A temperature check will be done upon arrival at school, and students with temperatures in this range will be sent home.
Abstain from the practice of providing fever reducing medicines for the purpose of sending your child to school.
Wear a mask or cloth face covering to minimize risks to others when out in public, and clean and sanitize them often.
Come to school directly from home, and return home after school, minimizing stops to essential errands when possible.
Avoid unnecessary travel and self-quarantine after returning from another country.
Avoid large gatherings and events where people are not adhering to state and local safety guidance.
Wear masks (adults and children) when carpooling, with windows open if possible.
Limit your child’s outside of school engagement to only immediate family or students in the same cohort.
Not following the guidelines of the Chartwell Family Pledge may put others at considerable risk. We ask all members of our community to embrace with positivity and an open mind the changes required this school year, understanding that because of COVID-19, our learning spaces, activities, and other events may look and feel different than in other school years.
If you do not feel you can follow these guidelines, we encourage you and support you in continuing with the online learning model. Thank you for being part of our community and working with us to bring our students back together, where they learn and grow best.
