English Language Arts - Mrs. Coble
In ELA we did a read aloud of "The Houdini Box". It was a wonderful fiction story about Harry Houdini. It was funny at times and serious at others. We were able to compare the book to other works of fiction that the author , Brian Selznick, wrote. We had great discussion and all students took an AR test on the book! The AR reading party will be on Friday, May 6th at 7am. Students who will be able to attend have read two books 4.0 or above, have successfully taken an AR test, and have placed their name on the grid outside of the classroom. We have had AR checks the entire month of April. Congratulations to all who were proactive and achieved their reading goal!!
Please sign and return your child's interim report envelope and return their red Wednesday folder.
Math - Mrs. Harris
First things first, I am so proud of all that students have done to finish their first week of testing strong. I was so impressed with the good behavior and cooperation put forth by my homeroom each day. They gave their best efforts in all they were asked to do and kept their positive attitude going to encourage others. I am excited to see how much they have grown as they take MAP math on Tuesday. I know how much they have learned and how hard they have worked.
Today we began the Get Into Shape Project that is a student favorite from Mrs. Hall. She has used this project for many years and I am excited for all of the fifth graders to experience it. I have sent home a note with interim reports about the project. Students will have thirty minutes daily to work on the project in class and I will provide them with the materials they need. They are certainly welcome to bring other materials if they wish to go above and beyond with their creativity. Projects will be due no later than Monday, May 9. Those handed in early on May 6 will receive 5 bonus points.
Science and Social Studies - Mrs. Hubbard
I’d love to give a big shout out to my homeroom this week for how well they did on testing!!! We kept our homerooms Tues.-Thurs. for testing to keep things consistent for the students. Our children enjoyed breakfast provided by the teachers and a snack from Mrs. Weathers & Mr. Smith. It was a long week it seems, but they did an amazing job! Also I want to brag on attendance on testing days. We had 100% fifth grade attendance each day of testing! Great job guys!! Thursday we celebrated our incentive with movies in the classroom and had our raffle today.
With testing this week involving so much of the school day, we took it easy on academics just to give our brains a break. We did some observations with the anoles, played review games for science to prepare us for PASS testing coming up in May, and finished up some activities with ecosystems. Next week on Monday and Tuesday, students will be taking their MAP Reading test on Monday and MAP Math test on Tuesday. Make sure you get a good night’s rest and eat breakfast.
Interim reports went home today (Friday) so please make sure you sign and return them as soon as possible. It’s hard to believe we are in the final weeks of school. How is it already May? We have a lot to do between now and June 1st, so hang in there! We’ve almost made it!
