NEWS FROM STUDENT SERVICES

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Students must pass their classes with a D (60%) or better in order to receive credit for the class. Students not attaining credits are in danger of not graduating with their classmates. Effective the 21-22 school year, the district will no longer reclassify students. We wanted you to be aware that even though students’ grade levels will progress from 9 to 12, this will not necessarily mean your student has enough credits to meet the graduation requirements. Per the SMSD Program Planning Guide, below is the chart of the minimum number of credits students must earn in order to remain on track to graduate with their classmates.
- Students will advance forward in grade level based on the number of years they have been in high school. Beginning with the 2021-2022 school year, students will no longer be required to meet a minimum credit threshold to advance to the next grade level. However, students must meet all graduation requirements in order to graduate. The following chart should be used as a guide to evaluate whether a student is on track for graduation.
GRADE LEVEL CREDIT GOAL
End of Grade 9 - 5.5 credits
End of Grade 10 - 11.5 credits
End of Grade 11 - 16.5 credits
End of Grade 12 - 23.5 credits
You can find your student’s progress with their Graduation Requirements on your Skyward home page under “Graduation Requirements”.
Summer Programs are posted on the SMSD website:
If you have questions or your student is behind on credits, please reach out to your student’s Academic Counselor by email or phone.

Baseball:
Varsity watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 14-2 loss to Mill Valley on Thursday. Varsity struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Mill Valley, giving up 14 runs. Jett Messenger was on the pitcher's mound. The pitcher surrendered seven runs on six hits over one inning, striking out two. Jordan Black and Seldon Deemer entered the game from the bullpen, throwing two and a third innings and two-thirds of an inning respectively. Emitt Gates led with two hits in two at bats. .
Boys Golf
North Varsity Golf competed Ryder Cup tournament for the first time in 5 years. SMN pairings of Cole Hageman, Jason Culp, Jake Schneider, Logan Oberle, Ben Cloud and Aiden Wiegers competed against the Gardner Edgerton golf team. SMN took 2 of the 3 points possible as they won the first two of three rounds played. Unfortunately the Blue Valley,Lawrence, GE team edged us out to 1 point 10 - 11. Great tournament which went to the last pairing on the course to determine the winner! All of the golfers love this format because they get to compete with one of their teammates as a team and not just as an individual golfer. North continues to put up another strong tournament showing as we approach the 2nd Sunflower League Tournament on Monday at Lawrence Country Club.
Softball:
Varsity fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 4-0 loss to Olathe West on Thursday. Olathe West took the lead on a home run in the first inning. In the first inning, Olathe West got their offense started when M. Walker, #25, homered on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs. Kelsey Hoekstra was in the circle and lasted seven innings, allowing five hits and four runs while striking out ten. The Bison had 3 errors. Tyra Wright, Aly Worthy, and Faith Woodruff each collected one hit to lead Shawnee Mission North Varsity.
Varsity defeated Olathe South 6-2 on Tuesday. North got things started in the first inning. Rilee Bell singled on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs. SMN Varsity put up three runs in the seventh inning. The offensive onslaught came from singles by Kaylee Limback and Kelsey Hoekstra. Hoekstra was in the pitcher's circle for Shawnee Mission North Varsity. Hoekstra allowed three hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out 13. Hoekstra went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Shawnee Mission North Varsity in hits.
