Welcome Back to School
9/6/19
Hello Roadrunner Families,
Welcome back to the 2019-2020 school year at Rolling Ridge Elementary. We are so excited to start the new year and to see the amazing things that our roadrunners are going to accomplish this year. Our teachers have spent the first days of school getting to know their students, establishing routines, and setting the stage for a magnificent year of learning. If you were unable to attend Back to School Night or Open House this year, please feel free to contact your child's teacher to schedule a conference. As always, we look forward to working with you to ensure a successful school year.
As we begin the new school year, there are several important reminders. First, please be sure to complete the virtual first day folder through ParentVue. In completing the first day folder, you will have the opportunity to acknowledge the LCPS student rights and responsibilities handbook, complete the media release form, and update phone numbers so that we have up to date contact information for you. If you need assistance with ParentVue or other paperwork, please contact our school's front office at (571) 434-4540.
Also, we are looking for parent volunteers to serve as our school's MSAAC (Minority Student Achievement Advisory Committee) and SEAC (Special Education Advisory Committee) Delegates for the 2019-2020 school year. If you are interested in either of these positions or would like more information, please contact me.
Finally, on the first day of school each student brought home a copy of our school's parent-student handbook. This handbook outlines Rolling Ridge procedures and includes important information like the student calendar and the district's Title I policies. Please review the handbook and reach out with any questions.
I look forward to a successful partnership with each of our roadrunner families.
Sincerely,
Ms. Sacco

News from the Gym
Welcome back to school Roadrunners,
We’re ready to kick off the month of September with a variety of activities that will keep students moving and learning. The goal of our program is to teach students to develop healthy living habits that will last a lifetime. We accomplish that by having students participate in a wide variety of activities, and challenges that will increase their physical, social, and mental abilities, as well as teamwork and cooperation skills. We hope to provide a safe, fun, and motivating class that will encourage all students to want to participate, have fun and try their best. This month, Focused Fitness activities, nutrition, and core curriculum will be implemented into P.E. classes. Did you know that September 23rd through September 27th is “Take Your Parents to P.E. Week?” Parents are invited to join physical education classes with their students. Please refer to your child’s physical education schedule listed on the school website to determine the days and times your child attends class. We’d love to have you in class!!
Here are some reminders that will make physical education safe and fun this year:
1. Please remind your child/children to wear sneakers/tennis shoes to class each day.
2. Girls should wear shorts under dresses if they attend this class.
3. If a student has a medical condition or injury, please send a note/medical excuse.
4. Avoid wearing jewelry to class.
Assessment in Physical Education? Yes!
Students will be assessed in the areas of skill performance/content taught, and appropriate behavior and safety in class. Assessments will follow this learning progression scale:
Grading Scale:
· 4 - Student exceeds the standard. The student can apply, explain, analyze, etc. what was learned.
· 3 - Student met the standard. The student can demonstrate important concepts and skills taught.
· 2 - Student is progressing toward the standard. The student can recall basic/some information about concepts and skills taught. Prompting may be required
· 1 - Student is progressing toward the standard but requires assistance. Student has a limited ability to complete tasks independently.
Please feel free to visit the physical education page on the Rolling Ridge website. We will keep our page updated every month. You may visit this page to find information about nutrition that we teach, a nutrition newsletter, nine-week plans, etc. Additional information will continue to pop up on our page occasionally.
Finally, please know that we set clear expectations for the students for every class. We want them to succeed and become lifelong movers! We are looking forward to a great year here at Rolling Ridge Elementary. If you ever have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us by phone at the school, e-mail, or drop by and jump in a lesson with us!

Counseling Corner
Welcome Roadrunner Families to another exciting year! Joining the counseling team this year is Mrs. Abuasi-Eqab who will work primarily with second and fourth grades. Mrs. Abuasi-Eqab will be at Rolling Ridge on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Mrs. Huey is our full time counselor and will be working primarily with kindergarten, first, third and fifth graders. Together, we will make sure our students are treated with respect and feel welcomed at school. School counseling lessons will occur every other week for 30 minutes. This month, lessons will focus on introducing the role of a school counselor and kindness.
If you would like to learn more about our lessons, please ask your students the following questions.
- What does a School Counselor do?
- Who is your School Counselor?
- How can we be kind to other students?
- How can we show kindness at home?
Mrs. Abuasi-Eqab and Mrs. Huey are available to meet with students for individual and small group counseling. They can help students with a variety of social-emotional issues as well as teach students strategies to be the best person they can be. If you have any questions or concerns, please call us at 571-434-4542 or email at haneen.abuasieqab@lcps.org or morgan.huey@lcps.org. We look forward to a great year!
Let's Talk Tech!
In STEM Lab this month we will be working with students on collaboration and inquiry skills. Third, Fourth, and Fifth grade students will learn how to use the iPad App, Explain Everything, to explain and document the world around them and explore their Science standards. All students have been working on Typetastic, a web-based typing program, and a digital escape room. The Library and STEM Lab will be working together on a Zipline Design Challenge based on the book Pigeon Has to Go to School. We will continue to work on the 5 C’s of Loudoun County as we dive deeper into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math instruction.
For more information or questions about our STEM lab, you can contact us by calling the front office of the school or by email.

Music Notes
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! We are excited for a very musical year.
Students in all grades will be using the classroom percussion instruments during the 1st quarter. They will work on musical skills by singing, moving, and creating rhythms.
Parents of 4th and 5th grade students - please be on the lookout for a flier for 4th and 5th grade chorus. This is an opportunity for students who like to sing to have extra practice and prepare for some fun performances. This is an optional group for students who enjoy music!
4th graders will begin using recorders this fall. More information will be sent home in the coming weeks.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns at 571-434-4540, or by email.
