We've worked hard & had some fun...
read all about the things we've done! 12/19/14
Spelling
As previously noted, we did not have a spelling test this week! There will not be a spelling test the first week in January, when we return from break, either. Your child's new list will be sent home Friday, January 9th!
Writing
This week in writing, we wrapped up our informational writing of lab reports. We will continue our informational unit after break, but our focus will shift to informational chapter books! We will share our expertise with others by writing informational books on topics we are very knowledgeable about!
Reading & Language Arts Skills
This week, we worked with verb tenses (past, present, and future), as well as irregular past tense verbs. We are recognizing that irregular past tense verbs do not simply end with -ed. Some examples of irregular past tense verbs include ran, sat, and swam.
We have begun our big unit on comparing different versions of the same story. This week, we read two versions of The Three Little Pigs. After break, we will write a side-by-side comparison of these two stories using our notes from this week.
Math
In math this week, we worked on accurately drawing the hands on an analog clock, after reading the time digitally. We continued our the skip counting work we needed for telling time to the nearest five minutes as we began to deeply focus on money. Some activities relating to money this week included, counting various groups of coins, thinking of many different ways to make the same money amount, and solving word problems relating to money. Your child can practice coin counting skills at home with spare change! If your child can make 45 cents one way, challenge him/her to make it using a different combination of coins!
Things to Remember or Make Note of...
-Next spelling list will come home until Friday, January 9th!!
-As your child reads at home, he/she should be filling in the December Book It! calendar for each 20 minutes read! The new January calendar was sent home today!
-Check & empty your child's blue folder daily! Please remember to sign your child's weekly log at the end of each week!
-Check your child's folder for an assignment packet to work on over the long break!
