I hope your Saturday is going well. A highlight this week was our 6th grade outdoor school experience. I enjoyed spending Wednesday with them at Trickle Creek 4-H Center. A number of students told me their favorite part of outdoor school. They said the field studies to learn about plants, animals, soil, and water; the fun activities and games, the food and dessert, cabin time with friends, and everything. Attached below are a few outdoor school pictures.
First Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is Tuesday October 16
We will be discussing and voting on the 2018-2019 PTO budget tonight. Other topics include the track project, spring auction, preliminary lap-a-thon results, carnival recap and gaga ball pits. Reminder to take the 2019-2021 District Calendar Survey
The Beaverton School District staff and community are invited to assist with the selection of the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 District calendars by selecting their preferred calendar option for each of the two years. The survey will be open through October 14, 2018. The final calendars will be announced and posted on the District’s website following the October 22, 2018 School Board meeting. Key differences are outlined below.

Summer Reading Picnic
We are celebrating kids who finished the Summer Reading Program at public libraries with a special Picnic in the Library on Friday, October 19. This will happen during the school day. We'll bring kids up to the library. Beaverton City Library sent us a list of Summer Reading finishers. If your student finished the program at another library please email me. erica_moore@beaverton.k12.or.us
We are beginning to form Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) teams in library. We promote OBOB to 3-5 and 6-8 in Library Specials and Media Class. It's very informal at Raleigh Hills. We encourage students to form teams and organize themselves. We do help students find others to create a team, if they don't have one. We do not form teams or select kids for specific teams at Raleigh Hills. This is a voluntary program. We provide some extra copies of the books for students and we hold a book battle in February to determine the team that will represent Raleigh Hills against other schools. Our focus is to have fun and get kids to read quality books they might not otherwise find. The regional battle for OBOB is usually in March or April.
Hearing Screenings
Hearing screening for grades K-3 will be on Thursday, October 18th and
re-screen of students referred on November 30th by Pacific University staff and audiology students.
If your child is in 4th or 5th grade and you want them to be hearing screened, notify the office in writing prior to October 18th.
Notify the office in writing if you do not want your student(s) screened.
Option School Application Process for 2019-2020
The application timeline has changed for the 2019-2020 school year. The lottery application phase has been shortened to make Second Consideration applications available earlier. This will allow students more time to work on their applications and schools more time to review them.
The Beaverton School District is nationally recognized for high student achievement and innovative programs. Beaverton students in grades 6-12 have the opportunity to investigate learning options that best fit their academic needs. Students can choose their neighborhood school or apply for one of a number of learning options. Transportation is provided.
Applications for the 2019-2020 school year will be available starting Monday, October 15, 2018. Please plan to attend one or more of the open houses that are available. Students may only select one option on their application, so do some early investigation of the options online.
All applicants must reside within the Beaverton School District boundaries. Beginning October 15, current Beaverton School District students are able to apply online using their student ID. Resident students not currently attending a Beaverton school, or who do not have Internet access, will need to complete a paper application available online, or at any school office beginning October 15, 2018. Please give careful consideration to your choice of school. Once an application has been submitted, no changes will be allowed.
Applications must be received no later than Friday, December 7, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. (PST).
