Notes from the Nurse!
Please be cautious of the highly contagious Norovirus (“stomach flu”). It is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines (gastroenteritis) and is easily spread from an infected person to others via contaminated food or beverages or by touching contaminated surfaces. Symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and sometimes fever, headache and generalized body aches. Symptoms develop 10-48 hours after exposure and can last 1-3 days. There is no cure and no vaccine for norovirus. Treatment is “supportive”—drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and getting lots of rest!
Because norovirus is easily spread and can live on contaminated surfaces for up to 2 weeks, a bleach-based household cleaner is recommended for surfaces, and clothing from an infected person should be washed with hot water. Dishes and utensils should also be washed using hot water. Carefully rinse fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating.
Please be advised that alcohol-based hand sanitizers have no effect against norovirus—it is better to wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water to help reduce your risk of this illness.
Wishing you a happy and healthy Springtime!
