Getting Organized!
Dear Atholton Families,
Last week ended with our Honor Roll Celebration and ice cream sundaes! Over 70% of our student body qualified for the Honor Roll. Congratulations to all our students for their academic achievement. Moreover, thank you parents for supporting your students and helping to ensure their academic success.
Also last week, our PTSA invited HC DrugFree to speak to parents on vaping. Thank you to those who attended. There was some important information shared on this ever increasing issue facing our young adults. Please visit their website for more information. If you would like to help this nonprofit organization continue to provide services to our schools and county, please click here. A huge thank you to PTSA President, Kim Lowe, for making this happen.
Helping Student Get Organized!
Do you ever find yourself with, “so much to do and so little time?” Indeed, it seems that people today continually have to make decisions regarding the use of their time. Sorting through and prioritizing activities is a skill that is needed every day in our lives.
Our students find themselves also in a position wherein they must make choices regarding activities. Organizational skills are not intuitive and thus need to be taught and developed in our young people. It has become even more important for parents to help students to look at all the activities in their lives and find ways to choose the ones they believe to be the most important and to say no to others. It is always interesting to note how many students receive grades of C or below also have the comment, missing/incomplete assignments or poor preparation. Both of these comments truly indicate that the student has poor organizational skills. A quick look through the school planner may reveal a large part of the problem. Many students participate in athletics, dance, scouts, church groups, and other activities outside the school day. Additionally, they want to spend time with their friends, play their video games and “just chill.” All of these activities are valuable for our young adults. It is amazing how many things students can accomplish if they simply organize their time more efficiently and effectively. Remember, organization does not come naturally, but needs to be taught, just like any other skill that we learn. Parents can help their children by discussing activities for the week and by the day, and helping students to see where the prioritized activities can fit in their day along with the others.
As we approach the end of a year and the beginning of a new one, it is the perfect opportunity to begin new habits. Have a conversation with your young adult about his or her organizational skills. What can be added and improved upon to create an effective system? Remember, this is not only a high school teachable moment, but also a lifelong lesson.
Have a fantastic week!
Warmly,
Robert A. Motley
