Third Grade Parents are Partners in a Successful Beginning-of-Grade Reading Test!
Here are some things parents can do to support their child and our school on this day:
1. Calm any test anxiety- encourage them to do their best but help them understand that the test is to see what third grade skills they already know! They may not know some of the answers because it is third-grade content, but take their best guess based on the reading passages/what they think is being asked.
2. POSITIVE VIBES! Let your child know that you are proud of them- smiles and a positive outlook go far in students wanting to perform well. Spread positive vibes to your childâs teachers too!
3. REALLY IMPORTANT- make sure your third-graderâs laptop is plugged in and charging every night- this habit will ensure their laptop will not shut down during testing and instruction. If your childâs laptop seems to not be charging correctly, please share with your childâs teacher so we can get it fixed. Students will need to follow the procedures in submitting a laptop for repair.
4. Make sure students are on time for school and if they need to get breakfast, be at school when doors open at 7:40 am so they are not rushed. If not eating breakfast at school, make sure they get breakfast at home to fuel their brain to do its job.
5. Practice getting a good nightâs sleep so they are able to endure a test that could be as long as three hours.
While these tips are geared toward our third-graders taking their first State Test, these actually apply to all our students as they get assessed throughout the year!
Positive Thinking Day is Tuesday, September 13th!
âPositive Thinking Day was first celebrated in 2003. An American entrepreneur came up with the idea of dedicating a day to positivity and positive thinking. The only goal of the day is to have a positive attitude at all times.
Positive thinking reaps a lot of benefits. Studies show that positive thinking is not just good for our emotional well-being, but also our mental health. It has the power to reduce the risk of heart diseases, and alleviate stress and anxiety. Studies have also shown that positive thinking can increase a personâs life span and keep them healthy for a longer period. In fact, positive thinking is so crucial to your body, that it can help build immunity and resistance towards minor illnesses such as the common cold.
There are several different techniques and approaches that you can use to try and be more of a positive thinker. One of the best ways to start thinking positively is by catching your thoughts and reframing them. If you find yourself having a negative reaction to a situation, try to change your perspective. Try to identify the reasons why you feel negatively towards the situation, and if you can, try to pick the positive outcomes of the same situation. Talking to a friend who is going through something similar, or simply thinking out loud can help you find the positive in any situation. Remember, the positives donât have to be huge, monumental wins- just simple, small wins that uplift and encourage you. A lot of small wins throughout the day will result in a positive attitude.â (reference- https://nationaltoday.com/positive-thinking-day/)
SAFETY AT ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL
Doors to the school do not open until 7:40 am and that means students arriving to campus before that time are not supervised by adults. Please make sure students do not exit vehicles before a staff member is present to assist and supervise. If your child is a walker, please ensure that they leave the house at a time that they would arrive at CFIE between 7:40 - 7:55. Many students have been showing up earlier and waiting around/playing in the front - should something happen to them, there are no adults supervising until 7:40. Please help us keep students safe by monitoring the time they leave the house.
DISMISSAL
If you are picking up your child as a car rider or hand-to-hand walker, please make sure you have your parent transportation tag to match your child's transportation tag. If you do not have your tag, you will need your id and will need to buzz the office at the front door to pick up your child so we can verify you as the adult allowed to pick up this student.
For arrival and dismissal, if you are parking and walking your child to and from school, please use the crosswalk and make sure you are walking with your child, not allowing them to run ahead or trail behind - with the car rider line in a continuous flow, we would never want a child to be injured by running between cars.
Bus safety- please talk to your child about bus safety, especially getting on and off the bus in a safe manner. Students have assigned seats and should always be completely seated in their seat with their backpack in their lap. The quicker they can do this, the bus can resume transitions to and from school. Students should also have feet/items out of the aisle and maintain a quiet noise level where they talk to the person sitting next to them, not students in other seats that prompts louder talk and sitting unsafely in their seats- using outside voices on the bus can be distracting to the driver and prompt unsafe conditions.
Thank you for keeping all students safe with your diligence in following the procedures we have in place - be sure to check out the student handbook and OCS handbook sent home for more details on safety measures we have to ensure a safe learning environment.
