Freshmen learn the science and design of clean water
The course has students designing water filters through 3D design, 3D printing, and the science of creating clean water around the globe. Each student spent over three weeks of distance learning focused on the projects, showcasing their findings in a final presentation.
The goal of GATES is to provide students with access to new technology combined with science and engineering. Each student designed a water filter in 3D using a free cloud-based application called Tinkercad. The designs were submitted to their teachers and 3D printed at Gladstone High School. The 3D printed filter was then sent home in the mail with all the components to build the filter and produce clean water.
Each student documented their filter construction and created a presentation about clean water and earthquake preparedness.
Students were also introduced to the Water & Environmental Technology [WET] program at Clackamas Community College. The WET program is a way for students to get certified in water treatment in just two years and have a stable job in the water treatment industry immediately after completing the program.
“Our goal with GATES is to provide students with the opportunity to look at post-secondary options in our community,” said instructor Brenden Thwing. All freshmen will take the course fall and winter trimesters through Gladstone High School’s distance learning program.
Hopper joins Gladstone Schools leadership team
The Gladstone School District selected Rachel Lopez Hopper as the new director of finance. She started in the role on January 4, replacing Samantha Nelson who left the district for a job with the McMinnville School District.
Hopper served as Chief Financial & Operations Officer for the Reynolds School District for 8 years. She also brings experience from both the Ontario School District and the City of Ontario where she served as Director of Finance. She holds a B.S. degree from Northwest Nazarene University and is now pursuing her MBA from Western Governors University.
"I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to join an amazing team with strong leadership and passionate staff," said Hopper. "I have been so impressed by all of the work happening in Gladstone and I am excited to support students and staff in meeting the goals of the District."
“We are excited to have Rachel join our team," said Superintendent Bob Stewart. "She comes to the Gladstone School District with many successful years of experience, and she was the top selection from an outstanding field of applicants."
