From the Desk of Pastor Paul
Dear Friends,
Sunday worship brings us to the middle point of our journey through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount – what we have called “A Disciple’s Manifesto”. Thus far, Jesus has revealed the profile of a disciple and called his followers to a deeper righteousness than that of the religious leaders of the day – a heart righteousness flowing from Jesus’ transformation of our hearts and minds.
As we turn to Matthew 6:7-15 on Sunday, we see at the center of Jesus’ message the issue of prayer. We call it “The Lord’s Prayer”, but it really is “The Disciple’s Prayer” as Jesus is teaching his disciples how they should pray. While we often use the words of the prayer directly, its words are meant to model for us the aspects of prayer which are foundational to our prayer life as disciples. And make no mistake, its central place in the Sermon is meant to trumpet how important prayer is for us as disciples.
My guess is, if you all are like me, that prayer is a challenging subject. In our busy, driven lives with families and work and leisure activities and technology constantly beeping and buzzing at us, when and where do we find time and space for prayer? And when – or if - we do, how do we pray? What do we pray? Do our prayers really have an impact?
It’s a subject worthy of much reflection, certainly more than just one Sunday message affords. But on Sunday we will seek to understand why Jesus places such a priority on prayer for us. As practice before Sunday, please pray for this message and for our time in worship, that the presence of Christ may be with us so we may continue to grow as his faithful disciples!
See you Sunday,
Pastor Paul
P.S. Two other important Sunday events: our Congregational Meeting for Election of Officers will be at 11:30 immediately following our time in worship…and Live! At The Lake with Max Winfrey takes place at 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon. I hope you will plan to be present and participate in both events!
