Digital Citizenship

Grade 9 Technology Unit - Design Cycle Guide

Assessment Task

Description of task: The overall objective is to increase the students’ awareness and understanding of their digital citizenship responsibilities and their digital footprint and how they can influence this. Students will investigate digital citizenship and issues relating to digital footprint and design, plan and create a product for a target audience communicating issues relating to digital citizenship and digital footprint and evaluate the effectiveness of their product.

Context: Digital Citizenship is a concept which helps students/children/technology users understand how to use technology appropriately. Digital Citizenship aims to prepare students/technology users for a society full of technology. Too often we are seeing students as well as adults misusing and abusing technology.

Challenge: Your challenge is to investigate, design, plan and create a product for a target audience that communicates issues (raises awareness and influence the audience to do the right thing) relating to digital citizenship and digital footprint and evaluate the effectiveness of their product.

Investigation

Criterion A: Investigate

For top marks: The student explains the problem, discussing its relevance. The student critically investigates the problem, evaluating information from a broad range of appropriate, acknowledged sources. The student describes detailed methods for appropriate testing to evaluate the product/solution against the design specification.

For Your Design Cycle Report

Problem Defined: Conduct some research about digital citizenship and explain what it is. Then focus on a particular problem with the broad topic, that you will focus on addressing in this project and justify your choice. This is where the student explores digital citizenship problem through research. Furthermore, the student must focus on one particular issue and explore it in greater depth and explain why this issue was chosen as the focus.

Design Brief – Create a product for a target audience that raises awareness and influence the audience to do the right thing, in relation to digital citizenship. Design Specifications: The student must create a product that will raise awareness in the secondary school at NISC. The product must be informative and then must provide simple and clear instructions about what to do/ what not to do. The product will be a XXX and must contains: XXXX

  • Target audience ?
  • Technology to be used?
  • When and how the campaign will be run?
  • how large/small the product will be?

Testing Method – I will test my product Friday, 20th of Sept with 5-7 classmates. They will test the product and measure it using the following criteria: XXXXX The feedback will be collected through a survey/feedback sheet/interview.

Research Focus

Research:
  • list some questions that will guide your research
  • digital citizenship - explained
  • one digital citizenship issue represented on an infographic
  • public awareness campaigns - explained
  • public awareness campaigns - examples of excellent public awareness campaigns
  • public awareness campaigns - the variety outlined
  • NISC IT Use Policy - include this in your report and include your own thoughts about the policy, in relation to digital citizenship

Design

Criterion B: Design

For Top Marks: The student generates a range of feasible designs, each evaluated against the design specification. The student justifies the chosen design and evaluates it fully and critically against the design specification.

Design 1

Explain your first design then evaluated in relation to the design specifications.

Design 2

Explain the second design then evaluate it in relation to the design specifications.

Design 3

Explain the third design, then evaluate it in relation to the design specifications.

Design Chosen - Conclusion

Identify which design is the best and justify your choice.

Plan

Criterion C: Plan

For Top Marks: The student produces a plan that contains a number of detailed, logical steps that describe the use of resources and time. The student critically evaluates the plan and justifies any modifications to the design.

Detailed Plan

Date: Friday 6th September

Action: Create a Detailed Plan

Resources: Calendar and computer

Allocated Time: 60-90min

Reflection and follow-up: My plan creation was completed quickly (30min) and my greatest concern is that I have two full weeks to create my product and 5 classes, but most of my work (filming) needs to be don outside of class time - so I need to be careful to use my time in class wisely. I'm also concerned that I have allowed only one weekend for filming and 5 days for editing... I am concerned that editing will take longer because I am using iMovie for the first time.

Create

Criterion D: Create

For Top Marks: The student competently uses appropriate techniques and equipment. The student follows the plan and justifies any modifications made, resulting in a product/solution of appropriate quality using the resources available.

The Product

I created a XXX and it can be examined here XXXX.

When I revisit my original design idea and compare this with my finished products there are some noteworthy changes and I will outline several modifications here:

  • my original design was going to be information heavy, however, after considering my target audience and researching other products I decided to reduce the information and use less word, with more meaning and which had a more influential message.

Evaluate

Criterion E: Evaluate

For Top Marks: The student evaluates the success of the product/solution in an objective manner based on the results of testing, and the views of the intended users. The student provides an evaluation of his or her own performance at each stage of the design cycle and suggests improvements. The student provides an appropriate evaluation of the impact of the product/solution on life, society and/or the environment.

The Test

My product was tested by Tim, Kim, Bill, Terry, Tanya and Sammy. They are all MYP students at NISC and they examined my product and completed a survey that I created with http://www.questionpro.com/ .

Here are the findings from my survey:
