A Peek at Our Week
September 10 - 14, 2018
MATH:
2.1 - In our first math unit students are learning to understand place value. We are modeling, reading, and writing numbers to 1000 using base ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. We are learning to skip count by 5s, 10s, and 100s within 1000. We are comparing two three-digit numbers using <, =, and >, and recording the results of the comparisons. We are also drawing picture graphs and bar graphs to represent data and we're using the data to solve problems presented in the graphs. This week we will review all of the unit 1 skills. Remember to use the spiral review to help your child prepare for the unit test on Thursday.
2.2 - Students have done well solving 2-digit and 3-digit subtraction and addition with regrouping problems. We have also been working on counting coins and solving money word problems and creating and answering questions about Pictograph. We will be reviewing all of the unit 4 skills this week and taking our Unit 4 Math Assessment on Friday, September 14th. Please use the Spiral Review that was sent home on Thursday to help your kids prepare for the test.
3.1 - In our first math unit the students are developing and using an understanding of place value to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. In this unit we will also learn to fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction. Students will also read and solve problems using scaled pictographs. This week our focus will be on three digit subtraction with regrouping and applying strategies to solve word problems. Please click here to review standards and skills for our first unit. Students can use the IXL 3rd grade activities to review addition: C6-C15 and use D3-D7 to practice subtraction.
READING:
In our first reading unit our goal is to read with fluency, stamina, and comprehension. Students will learn strategies to tackle difficult words. As we read we will also discover some special techniques that our favorite authors use and apply them in our own writing.
WRITING:
In our first writing unit we are improving our narrative writing. Students are learning to stretch out and magnify their small moment stories by adding details and strong beginnings and endings. We will discover craft moves that authors use to create powerful stories and learn to add these techniques as we write.
WORD WORK:
This week our phonetic focus is on words with digraphs (ch, th, wh, sh) in the beginning and ending positions. We will build, read, and spell words with this pattern in class over the next two weeks.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
We are beginning a new unit on geography. Students will use different sources to identify major topographical regions of Georgia.
