WE ARE THE SAME
GENDER EQUALITY THROUGH EDUCATION
Education is the KEY to success
Gender equality is the view that both men and women should receive equal treatment and not be discriminated against based on their gender. Although women are considered equal under law, that is not always the case in society. Not having an education is a significant barrier for underprivileged women. This can cause failure to understand and make use of limited rights that women have such as the right to own land or other property. The education of girls and women can lead to a wide range of benefits from improved maternal health, reduced infant mortality and fertility rates to increased prevention against HIV and AIDS. Education helps girls and women to have a positive impact on their families: better childcare (vaccination, schooling, etc.), better nutrition, better communication with the children and other family members. With the awareness of her role as citizen, an educated woman can play a more dynamic role in addressing the economic challenges faced by her country, in the areas of agricultural production, food self-sufficiency, the fight against environmental degradation, the use and conservation of water and energy. A recent study shows that the decrease in child malnutrition between 1970 and 1995 is attributable to the tune of 44% to the improvement in female education.
GET INVOLVED
The future of gender equality is in YOUR hands. The only way to change the world in which we live is to get involved. HeForShe is a solidarity campaign for gender equality initiated by UN Women. Its goal is to engage men and boys as agents of change for the achievement of gender equality and women’s rights, by encouraging them to take action against inequalities faced by women and girls.
