The Will to Lead
Part III: The Skill to Teach
Beware of Deficit Thinking
"As we have suggested throughout this book, when it comes to underserved students, many educators' beliefs and attitudes tend to be deficit oriented. Students are viewed as lacking something. Underserved students are many times seen as deficient, deviant, defiant, disruptive, and disrespectful. What they bring to the classroom culturally and linguistically is seen not as an asset, but rather as a liability. Therefore, [educators] are "off the hook"--since they can blame students for their own failure, there is no need to develop a responsive pedagogy. In a healthy school culture, educators have high will when it comes to student learning. When their culture is also high skill, they do what they must do to make student success a reality. They acquire the appropriate tools to become responsive in their instructional approach. Developing and using a responsive pedagogy is the opposite of deficit thinking for educators--it supports the mindset that all students can succeed."
