Facilitators' Findings
Design39Campus joined schools across the county by participating in The Great Kindness Challenge this past week. The Great Kindness Challenge is a transformative initiative that by fosters a culture of compassion, empathy, and positive interpersonal connections at schools. By encouraging and promoting acts of kindness, both big and small, the challenge creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond the initial gestures. Last week, D39C students and staff actively participated in spreading kindness, promoting a sense of unity and belonging, building strong, supportive relationships among our learning community.
Furthermore, the Great Kindness Challenge serves as a powerful catalyst for instilling crucial values in participants. It goes beyond the surface of addressing bullying, actively cultivating a mindset that celebrates kindness as a cornerstone of daily interactions. The challenge is transformative force through engaging activities and purposeful acts of goodwill, empowering individuals to not only grasp the concept of shared humanity but also to actively contribute to it. In essence, the Great Kindness Challenge leaves a lasting impact by planting the seeds of compassion, tolerance, and understanding, ultimately weaving a more harmonious and inclusive social fabric within schools and extending its influence beyond the classroom and outside the gates of D39C.
Thank you to our student support services team for bringing this fantastic event to D39C.

Learner Profiles vs. Report Cards
With Learner Profiles being sent home via US Mail, the question often arises: what sets a Learner Profile apart from a traditional Report Card? "Learner Profiles" and "Report Cards" are two distinct approaches to assessing and documenting a student's progress and achievements in an educational setting, each offering a unique perspective on a student's learning journey.
Learner Profiles:
Learner Profiles have been a part of the fabric of D39C since the school opened. These profiles are utilized at D39C in grades Tk-5 and they prioritize holistic aspects of a student's development that extend beyond academic achievements. They provide a comprehensive view by considering not only academic performance but also a student's strengths, weaknesses, learning style, interests, social-emotional development, and progress on the skills and dispositions developed by the LEDs at D39C. These profiles are personalized, emphasizing the uniqueness of each student and recognizing diverse talents and characteristics. Designed to monitor and support long-term growth, learner profiles aim to foster a comprehensive understanding of each student's learning journey.
You can find the 23/24 Learner Profile support document HERE.
Report Cards:
Report cards, implemented in grades 6/7/8 at D39C (and more commonly used in other secondary school settings), take a different approach than Leaner Profiles by primarily emphasizing academic achievements and grades in various subjects or courses. They adhere to a standardized format, delivering grades or ratings for specific subjects, assignments, and assessments. Report cards are frequently associated with summative assessments, providing a summary of a student's performance over a specific period. Serving as a formal means of communicating a student's academic standing, report cards play a crucial role in conveying this information to parents, guardians, and other stakeholders.
While both learner profiles and report cards contribute valuable information about a student's progress, they serve different purposes. Learner profiles offer a more comprehensive and individualized perspective, potentially fostering a deeper understanding of a student's overall development. In contrast, report cards provide a standardized and structured assessment of academic performance, making them a crucial tool for communication between educational institutions and stakeholders.

February is Black History Month
At Design39Campus, the celebration of Black History Month is a meaningful and purposeful endeavor that underscores our commitment to recognizing and honoring the remarkable contributions of African Americans throughout history. This month-long observance serves as a dedicated platform to highlight the diverse achievements of Black leaders, ranging from influential civil rights activists to prominent figures in various fields.
One of the key aspects of Black History Month is the acknowledgment of pivotal leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. His tireless advocacy for civil rights and his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech have left an indelible mark on the pursuit of equality. Additionally, the celebration pays homage to the influential Malcolm X, whose advocacy for Black empowerment and self-determination has played a significant role in shaping the discourse on racial justice.
Beyond these iconic figures, Black History Month at Design39Campus embraces the opportunity to delve into the stories of numerous other black leaders, each contributing uniquely to the cultural, social, and political landscape. By incorporating their narratives into the curriculum and activities, the school aims to educate students about the rich tapestry of black history.
This commemoration extends beyond historical figures to celebrate the achievements of black individuals across various disciplines, including science, literature, arts, and sports. By doing so, Design39Campus not only inspires students but also encourages a broader understanding of the diverse talents and contributions of the Black community.
In essence, the celebration of Black History Month at Design39Campus is a multifaceted initiative that fosters inclusivity, encourages dialogue on racial equality, and enriches the educational experience by highlighting the profound impact of black leaders throughout history.

Yes, You Have Seen This Before
Attendance and OCIS Contracts: If you have a student who will not be in class for 5-14 days, please notify the office so we can have the parents fill out an OCIS contract for their child. The forms will have to be completed and signed by parents 5-10 days in advance of the absence. Click here for a link to the OCIS Contract.
Parents are required to give 5 days notice for absences up to 5 days, 10 days notice for absences more than 5 days.
Prepping work for students who are absent is an incredible amount of work for our teaching staff and we ask that you give your child’s teacher as much advance notice as possible beyond the above guidelines.
We do not write contracts beyond 14 days. If you plan to be away for 15 or more days please contact the Welcome Center for the necessary procedures.
Would you like to become a part of the Design39Campus Team? Do you like to be outside and work with children? If so, we are looking for a few quality Motion Managers to help support our designers during body breaks and lunch during the middle of the day. Possible times are 10:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. or 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. If interested, please apply through Poway Unified School District at the this link.
Attendance: To report your child's absence or early checkout, please email the attendance office at d39cattendance@powayusd.com before 10:00 am on the day of the absence. Please include your child's name, homeroom/grade, dates of absence, and reason for absence. We kindly ask that you avoid checking out your student during the lunch period from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Please refer to the attendance section of our Design39Campus website for protocols regarding reporting student absences and requesting early release for your student.'
California Education Code 48205 states that a student may be excused legally from school when the absence is due to:
- Personal illness or injury
- Quarantine under the direction of a county or city health office
- Medical, dental, or chiropractic services
- Attendance at funeral services for a member of the immediate family
- Justifiable personal reasons, including, but not limited to, an appearance in court, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at religious retreats, attendance at an employment conference, when the pupil's absence has been requested in writing by the parent and approved by the principal or designated representative
- For the purpose of serving as a member of a precinct board for an election
- Exclusion for failure to present evidence of immunization
- Exclusion from school because student is either the carrier of a contagious disease or not immunized for a contagious disease
Communication with your Designer: If there is a need to communicate with your child during the school day, please send a message to your child’s LED or the Welcome Center. Please refrain from communicating with them directly through text messages or phone calls as it disrupts their learning.
Personal Items: For equity reasons, we are asking that students keep their personal playground equipment at home or in their backpack. Our wonderful Collaborative supplies us with enough funding to ensure that there is enough equipment during recess and lunch.
The D39C Collaborative
The D39C Collaborative is a 100% volunteer-run foundation designed to be responsive to the needs of students, parents, and learning experience designers of Design39Campus. Their mission is to expand and enhance the educational experience of every student attending Design39Campus.
