School Safety
Cardinal Families,
School safety is a top priority at Orchard View Schools. The partnerships between families and the school are essential in ensuring that our children are safe at school and that our teachers can teach and students can learn.
We are sharing this information with our families in hopes that families will continue these important discussions with their students at home.
Threats of violence towards students and school staff is unacceptable behavior. This type of behavior and talk is not allowed at school under any circumstances; even just playing. This behavior will not be tolerated at Cardinal Elementary and will result in serious consequences; including suspensions, the completion of threat assessments conducted by school staff and our School Liaison Officer with the student and family, and potential for a school board expulsion hearing.
We teach our students that it is ok to feel angry or frustrated; but it is NEVER ok to use your words or body to hurt others because of their feelings. If adults engage in those behaviors, it is a crime. The following is a statement from Muskegon County Prosecutor, D.J. Hilson:
“Any threat, real or implied, against a school, staff, or students is a felony. A criminal threat can be verbal, written, or posted online. It is not a defense to claim that the threat was a joke or was not going to be acted upon. We encourage parents to be extra vigilant in monitoring their children's online activities and their electronic devices to ensure the material being posted or disseminated is not threatening in any way. We have been made aware of verbal or written threats being made against schools in other communities, and we are asking our parents to help us prevent such threatening communication from occurring in our community. We are also working with area schools to help spread the message to our kids that jokes about violence against schools are no laughing matter and carry significant consequences.”
There are adults here to support students and to help manage peer conflicts. Physical aggression and threats towards others only makes conflict worse. We have created an online form for students to complete to communicate with adults who can help at school. It is on our student portal and accessible to our students. We introduced it this week and have already had several students reach out for support with concerns or peer conflicts.
When parents have concerns, we are happy to discuss and resolve concerns together. We are parents and understand that parents love their children and want to be an advocate for them. In order for us to work together productively, we ask that parents use school appropriate language and behaviors when calling or visiting the school.
Sincerely,
Cardinal Elementary Administrative Team
