WELCOME TO ELGER BAY ELEMENTARY & the 21-22 School Year!

Big picture

Welcome Message from Mr. Hanzeli

Dear Elger Bay Families!

August is the season when I am always reminded that we really are a new school each year.

We add students who have moved into our community. Staff join our team, sometimes as additions, sometimes replacing others who have moved on. As a school we celebrate and welcome our kindergarten students into what is usually their first ever public school experience. Those of us who have been here, including the children, are another year more mature, and another year along the path of their school experience.

In essence, we are always in a state of change. Throw in that the pandemic has given a jolt to our collective 'change' experience. We are all walking through the change in a very personal way.

We know change can be hard for children and adults. Our goal is that each student who graces our school experiences immense amounts of learning and love. Of course I am not speaking of the special love that is family and friends, but what I mean is the love of a staff that cares deeply about each and every student, their profession, their performance, and our relationships with each one of you.

This is a lofty goal, but I have met most of our students...and I know they deserve that from us. For those students and families we have not yet met, please know this is our goal and effort each day!

Here is to working together, hanging in there with each other, and making this a fantastic school year!

Important ACTION Item Request from Mr. Hanzeli

Student Placement and Family Connection Meeting (NEEDS ACTION)

On Monday morning, 8/23, 5:00 AM, an Email through School Messenger will arrive at the Email address that families have provided to our registrar. It will be your opportunity to do two things:

1. Learn your child's teacher/classroom placement

2. In that School Messenger message you can LINK to an ONLINE FORM that will allow you to set up a Family Connection Meeting prior to school beginning.

Grades 1 - 5 and PBS: Your Family Connection sessions will be 25 minutes and held on August 30 or 31 (only August 30 for PBS). This will be an important opportunity for you and your student to come by the school, meet with the teacher, and establish a great initial connection.

In addition, we will be working with you to check out each students Chromebook and charger for the year.

Kindergarten: Kindergarten has more Family Connection days as the sessions are each 45 minutes in length. After about 25 minutes, the teacher will do a small amount of work with the student to get an early glimpse at a few early learning activities.

In addition, we will be working with you to check out each students Chromebook and charger for they year.

School Supplies LINK

The school supply lists by grade level are listed on the Elger Bay website. Here is a shortcut to that link: Elger Bay School Supplies by Grade Level

Volunteers

We are still not able to accommodate any volunteers in the building. We will continue to monitor this and will be very excited when we can welcome back our most awesome helpers :-)

1:1 Chromebooks and Google Classroom or SeeSaw

Chromebooks

Part of beginning this school year will be assigning and handing off a CHROMEBOOK and CHARGER to each of our students, K-5.

To that end, we will be using the Family Connection days to check out the chromebooks to each student. It will be something that each student needs to take home and bring back each school day.

The purpose for this precaution is to be ready should there ever be any need to shut down a class, grade, or school for any extended period of time.

Depending on their grade level, students will either be working in the SEESAW or GOOGLE CLASSROOM platform when doing any work on their computer. More details and more learning for students and families will be coming as they are delivered.

REMINDER: Late Start Wednesdays

NOTE: Kindergarten families please pay special attention to this article (meant for everyone) as your child's first day of school will be on a Late Start Wednesday.

Wednesdays follow a late start schedule during which time staff are engaged in professional development and collaboration efforts. For those who are new to SCSD/EBE, this is the main thing to remember for Late Start Wednesdays:

- School will not be open for students until 9:55 a.m. First Bell, 10:15. School begins, 10:20.

- Bus service will arrive roughly 1 hour 20 minutes (80 minutes) later than on the usual 4Day schedule.

- Dismissal is still 3:30.

- Bus arrival home after school should be roughly the same as other days.

There are one or two exceptions to this Wednesday pattern. I will try to be diligent about sending reminders, but if you are a planner, here is a link to the student calendar for the full year. Student Calendar 2021-2022

Good Afternoon Families and Staff:

Back-to-School Webinar, August 23

Please join us on Monday, August 23rd, for a Welcome Back-to-School Webinar for families. There will be two opportunities to join the webinar: 9:00am and 6:00pm. We will be covering general information about what school will look like in the fall, how we will address learning and more! Both sessions will cover the same information. You may access the link for the Back-to-School Webinar HERE.

The first day of school is Thursday, September 2nd.

Staff Appreciation

Our staff are amazing! They have completed what is likely their most challenging year in education. Staff have navigated teaching remotely, in a hybrid classroom and more with patience and grace. Please know, I appreciate each and every one of you and I believe I can speak for our families when I say THANK YOU! We look forward to an exciting year ahead and appreciate the efforts of our staff every day. Please take some time to thank an educator, they deserve it!

YMCA-Sponsored Before and After School Childcare

We will continue partnering with the YMCA to provide childcare for families this school year. The YMCA will have safety measures in place that reflect what is in place at our schools. If you have any questions about YMCA childcare, please feel free to contact the YMCA.

No Cost Breakfast and Lunch for the 2021-2022 School Year

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will continue reimbursing schools and childcare centers for free meals to all students regardless of their income through the 2021-2022 school year. This means every student may eat breakfast and lunch at school for no cost. No money will be collected for breakfast or lunch for the 2021-2022 school year.

School Busses and Bus Routes

Our transportation department is ‘revving up’ in preparation to transport students to and from school. You can check bus routes on our website through eLink. Click here for information.

Elger Bay Staff Additions

Nearly every August we have the chance as a community to add new members to our school team. As I have interviewed and hired these wonderful people, I am able to share the great pride we all have in Elger Bay Elementary. When you get a moment, please take the opportunity to say hello and welcome them to Elger Bay Elementary.
