Dr. Benjamin E. Mays Elementary
December 2020 News
Our Shared Mission Statement: The Dr. Benjamin E. Mays Elementary Family strives to empower all children to light the way for the future by becoming lifelong learners and forward thinkers.
We thank you!
Our Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade teachers have put an intentional focus on the area of phonics. We know this is pivotal in the foundations of reading. Please take some time to ask them about the rules they are learning with reading. It is a beautiful sight to see!
Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers have put an intentional focus on comprehension and writing short answer/extended answers through the use of Ready Reading textbooks and engaging novels.
Please review math facts with your child. We have a program called Rocket Math that's available for our 1st-5th graders. Students can play this at anytime. Math is an area that we are continuing to grow in, but we know if students are not fluent in their math facts, it will be difficult for them to understand more complex math problems.
We value your support in our school. My motto is it takes a village to raise a child, and we need you! Please reach out to the school if you have any questions or concerns. We are wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

One School, One Book
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it also a fun worthwhile family activity. With the One School, One Book program, we aim to build a Community of Readers at our school. Everyone-students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff will all be following along together.
In school, your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive listening. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so that your child can be included.
Feel free to visit our school website each evening to hear a staff member read a chapter. We hope you enjoy the wonderful world of Humphrey!
