Let it Grow!
A Year One Inquiry
We have been learning about...
We have been exploring this through:
- A field trip to Grandpa's Garden where we explored and observed growing vegetables
- Going on exploration walks in Siena Park and gathering materials of plants in our environment
-Investigating the life cycle of plants
-Sketching technical drawings of plants
-Sorting and labeling photographs of plant materials
-Creating prints of plants onto fabric
-Planting seeds and developing a year one shared garden
Snap Shots of Our Current Unit of Inquiry
Demonstrating responsibility by taking care and planting our own seeds
Creating scarecrows during shared play to keep away the birds in our shared Y1 garden
Plant print making by using hammers to transfer plant dye onto fabric
Connecting it altogether
Transdisciplinary Learning
The students in Year One have had opportunities to connect their learning from their current Unit of Inquiry across other subject areas, such as Literacy and Mathematics.
In literacy, the children have been able to use their understanding of the 5Ws (who, what, when, where, how) in order to write and illustrate books related to their experience of creating a shared Year 1 garden.
In mathematics, the children have been continuing their investigation of patterns through the life cycle of plants from books such as The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle.
