MR. HORNE'S MESSAGE

BA Families,

School attendance is incredibly important to the success of your child's learning experience.

It is important that we have communication from home when a student is absent from school. Absences can be reported 24 hours a day on the attendance line at 913-993-2388.

If there is not communication from home the absence is documented as unexcused which can result in truancy concerns.

Below is our SMSD guidelines for attendance and state law for reporting truancy:

  • Students are tardy if arriving after 8:10 am - 10 tardies = 1 Unexcused Absence
  • Students arriving at school after 8:45 am = ½ Day Absence
  • Students leaving school before 2:15 pm= ½ Day Absence
  • Students who have 10 Excused Absences are required to have a doctor's note after 10

Kansas Truancy Law - All school districts in Kansas must report a student to the county attorney's office as truant if they meet any of the following criteria:

  • Any 3 Consecutive Unexcused Absences
  • Any 5 Unexcused Absences in a Semester
  • 7 Unexcused Absences in a School Year

I always want to work together as a team to make sure your child is at school regularly. Please reach out to me if you are facing challenges in getting your child to school every day.

Have a great weekend!
Mr. Horne
