RECAP of September 2019
- During the month of September, Counselors visited all Edmentum Credit Recovery Classes. This was done to ensure that all students in the program have a contract signed and a plan to keep them moving!
- During ClubRush on September 4th, counselors tabled and hosted an activity for students and staff where they encouraged everyone to "let go" of their negative thoughts and feelings and start to incorporate more positive affirmations!
- During Suicide Prevention Week , (Sept 9th-13th) counselors hosted a "Myth or Fact" activity at lunch to increase awareness to the fact that Suicide is preventable and SJUSD is committed to building protective factors to reduce the risk of suicide!
- Each year counselors attend the University of California and California State University Conferences. These professional development opportunities ensure that we are staying up to date with the most current educational trends as well as provide training and updates from the UC and CSU systems.
- We have started our core curriculum lessons! During September, Counselors invited all Seniors to an Academic/College and Career lesson. This lesson is tailored to meet the needs of each specific grade level and covers ALL post-secondary options! 9th, 10th and 11th grade coming up!
- On September 8th, our Counselor 101 video was shared with all students during intervention. This video lesson that is an introduction to the counseling department, reviews the role of the school counselor, how to access us, and upcoming events.
- UCAN: The United College Action Network, is a nonprofit corporation that provides leadership services and college preparation assistance to students desiring to enroll in four-year post secondary colleges, with a focus on admissions to over 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities. SJHS took 42 students to utilize their communication skills, participate in mock interviews, and learn more about higher education. 16 seniors were accepted to 2 or more Universities! 1 Student received a scholarship to Benedict for $92K for 9 semesters!
