Scholastic Writing Awards Announced
Saint Paschal Baylon School is quite proud of the creative writing talents of our junior high students. Four eighth graders have won recognition in the Scholastic Writing Awards of 2019. Since 1923, this national contest presented by The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers has recognized the creative talents of young adults in grades seven through twelve in 29 categories.
Clare Valenza won the 2019 Gold Key Award for her work entitled “Navy Blue” in the short story category. Clare has the added honor of winning this award two years in a row. Samantha Mailer also won the 2019 Gold Key Award for her work entitled “Down by the River” in the short story category. The Gold Key Award is given to writing that demonstrates the highest level of achievement in originality, personal voice, and technical skill. Clare and Samantha’s works will now be forwarded to New York for national award consideration.
Macey Israel won the 2019 Silver Key Award for her work entitled “Stuck” in the flash fiction category. The Silver Key Award is given to writing that demonstrates achievement worthy of recognition at the regional level.
Samantha Werbeck earned Honorable Mention for her work entitled “Touch Me Not” in the poetry category. Honorable Mention awards are given to writing demonstrating creative potential.
These junior high students will be invited to a reception held at the Cleveland Institute of Art on Saturday, January 19, 2019 where their works will be displayed and awards presented. What a gift these talented Saint Paschal Baylon students possess--the ability to delight with the written word.
Thank you to Mrs. Mary Connors for her guidance to our young writers.
Important Registration Information for Preschool Parents
It is that time of year when we begin to register for the next school year. In today’s communication folder, you will find your child’s registration materials. If your child will be registering for the next level of preschool, you will have a YELLOW folder. Please complete the yellow registration form and return it to the school office with the appropriate registration fee. If you will be registering your child for Kindergarten, you will have a GREEN folder. Please complete the green form and return it to the school office with the $225.00 registration fee.
Please remember that our programs fill up quickly, so please return all registration materials and fees by the deadline of FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1. You may contact the school office or your child’s teacher with any questions or attend the Preschool Open House on Thursday, January 24 at 6:30 pm.
If you have a younger child who is not currently enrolled in our preschool and you would like a packet, please call the school office or email office@saintpaschal.com to request one.
We are sending you these materials now so that you have the opportunity to submit them to the office before preschool registration opens to the public on Thursday, January 24 at the Preschool Open House.
MAP Testing - January 7 through January 25
At home, you can help to prepare your child by ensuring that he/she gets plenty of sleep each night and eats a nutritious breakfast each morning. Encourage your child to do his her best on each test. The goal is for the testing to provide a detailed picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn--whether it is on, above, or below grade level--and to plan instruction accordingly.
The Scholastic Book Fair is Coming!
The Book Fair is coming! The dates for the Fair are Tuesday, January 22nd thru Monday, January 28th, 2019. If you can, please sign up for one shift or more, if possible. This is always a great event at Saint Paschal Baylon. The link for the sign up is below. Thank you so much for volunteering.
Playground/Lunchroom Supervision-Grades 3 & 4
The links to sign up for playground/lunchroom supervision for parents/guardians of students in grades 3 and 4 are now live!
We are asking that each family (mom, dad, grandma, etc.) choose at least two days to volunteer for the month of January for 4th grade or February for 3rd grade, each time slot being 11:00-1:00. There are many, many time slots open! If you have a child in another grade level, but would find the time to help, please feel free to fill one of the open slots. We are always grateful for the help!
This is a great way for you to interact with your child and his/her classmates during the school day! Lunch/Recess Volunteers should arrive to school at 11:00 and check in at the office. Duties will include supervising students at recess, escorting students to the cafeteria from recess, and supervising in the cafeteria. Volunteers will be with one teacher and two "core" volunteers each day to help direct. Remember that after your two volunteer time slots, you are done for the year, as each month is assigned to a different grade.
Thank you again for your time and service to the students and teachers of SPB! Simply click on the grade level link to pick a time convenient for you: Grade 4 , or Grade 3.
