Clara Barton

Angel of the Battlefield

During the time period where women were encouraged to be housewives and stay inside their homes instead of work, Clara Barton took on many roles that were focused on helping others. Throughout Barton’s lifetime, she worked tirelessly to teach illiterate children, to gather supplies to send to battle zones, as a nurse in the American Civil War, and to form the American Red Cross.

"I may be compelled to face danger, but never fear it, and while our soldiers can stand and fight, I can stand and feed and nurse them."
