Stars Changed

Oprah Winfrey

There are a lot of people in this world that have changed their stars. An example of a person that has done this is Oprah Winfrey. She has not always been rich. Many people probably do not know what she went through before becoming what she is now.

As a child, Oprah lived in a farm with her grandmother. She then moved with her mother and she was abused by her own family. The abuse lasted years and soon she got tired of it and decided to live with her father. There, she obtained a job as a reporter and it was one of the first steps towards her fame. Ever since she was a child, she dreamed of becoming famous. She set her mind to it and she made it. She overcame drug and sexual abuse. At the age of fourteen, Oprah gave birth to a premature child who died months after. (Customized Girl) Now, she is the richest person woman in the television world, her show being the most watched talk show.

Rigoberta Menchú

Along with Oprah, there is also another person who changed her stars. This person is Rigoberta Menchú. "Rigoberta Menchú was born on January 9, 1959 to a peasant family and raised in the Quiche branch of the Mayan culture" (Rigoberta Menchú Tum). She worked picking coffee at a plantation when she was just a child. As a teenager, she became active in social reform activities. She did not like the way she was living so she decided to change her own fate. She later obtained the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 due to her hard work on the Indian Rights Movement and all she had accomplished.

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey faced a lot of racial prejudice when she was young due to the fact that she is multiracial. Because of prejudice and the judgement of interracial marriage, her parents ended up divorcing. Mariah's mom was left to take care of her and her siblings on her own. She had many jobs to support her family. When she was three years old, Mariah became interested in singing and would go with her mom to rehearsals. When she was six, Mariah debuted publicly. Now, Mariah is a very famous singer/songwriter. She did not let prejudice get in her way.

How Morals are Chosen

There are morals to almost everything. Morals are chosen so one can have an understanding of the outcome of a situation. For example, we see how the people mentioned above all followed the moral of "Follow your dreams." They went from having a somewhat difficult of very difficult life to becoming famous or a tremendous inspiration to society. I believe life is about morals; everyone lives by them. There can be good morals and bad morals. In some of the tales that were read in our English class, there were a variety of good lessons to be learned. An example would be the moral in the Pardoner's Tale, which is "Money is the root of all evil." We see how in the story, money was the cause of the death of the three friends. They wanted the gold to themselves and ended up keeping nothing. A great example similar to Oprah, Rigoberta, and Mariah is the story of Sir William, in A Knight's Tale. He wanted to be a knight ever since he was a child and his father told him that he could do it, he could change his own stars and he did. he ended up becoming a knight. In the Wife of Bathe's tale, the knight chose his fate in the beginning by raping a maiden. He also changed his stars when the queen was allowed to decide what to do with him. He had to go in search of an answer in order to maintain his life and he did.
