Getting to Know Your Students
An Introduction to the English Language Learner (ELL)
Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV
Designed to address all four domains of the Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching, this workshop will introduce educators to the English Language Learner (ELL). Participants will explore how cultural differences affect teaching and learning, how to develop a classroom environment to enhance learning, and the various types of programs that can meet the needs of ELLs.
The importance of the role of the English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in the instruction of students will be examined as oral language development and language proficiency is promoted inside and outside of the classroom. The Guiding Principles of Language Development, the Can-Do Descriptors, and the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) Standards Framework will be introduced. Recommended classroom strategies and approaches will be shared along with promoting literacy skills for ELL academic success.
It is suggested that a classroom teacher and the ESL teacher attend together.
