Literacy Coaching
Message from Jill emailed on 8/2:
I am excited about continuing our literacy work together this year! One of our goals will be to deepen our understanding and practices in writing workshop. One of the most important elements will be to use student writing data to drive instruction. To accomplish this goal, Lucy Calkins suggests administering the writing prompts for narrative, information, and opinion during the first weeks of school. The prompts are the same prompts K-5 and are found in the Writing Pathways book in your UOS kit:
- Opinion Prompt – page 86
- Information Prompt – page 128
- Narrative Prompt – page 182
Try to stay as close to the wording of the prompt (K-5) as possible so that we could have vertical conversations as we look K-5 at our writers. Don’t worry about how well the students write at this point – this is pre-assessment and will give us data on next steps.
Can’t wait to see you!
Jill Hawes, Literacy Consultant/Coach
