September is Suicide Prevention Month
From the Desk of Mrs. Gase
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 10 through 24. We at Otsego Schools take the safety and well-being of our students very seriously, we are planning to provide our junior high students with some basic information about youth suicide and what to do if they are worried about themselves or a friend.
We realize that this is a difficult topic. Sometimes people are afraid that talking about suicide will make it happen. In fact, talking about suicide is often a relief for those who have been thinking about it. Our willingness to bring it up allows them to feel more open about sharing their feelings.
We have carefully selected a research based program called Lifelines Prevention. Lifelines Prevention uses age appropriate information to teach basic information about potential warning signs for suicide and emphasizes help-seeking behavior when a student is worried about themselves or a friend.
If you have any questions about what your student will be learning, please reach out to Mary Gase at mgase@otsegoknights.org. Mary Gase is our district’s Prevention Education Specialist who will be delivering the program.
If you do not want your child to participate in the program, please contact Jon Rife at jrife@otsegoknights.org or 419.823.4381.

Safe School Helpline
Dear Parents, Students and Friends,
Recent polls show that parents’ first concern about schools today is their child’s safety. That is my concern as well. Fortunately, the Otsego is very safe. However, no community is immune from the threats of violence and drugs that endanger public schools nationwide.
We are introducing a Safe School Helpline® to help prevent such actions. It is designed to assist you in reporting any wrongdoing that impacts our schools, our students, or our staff – anonymously, so as to protect your privacy. For example, you may wish to report acts of violence, theft, drug or alcohol use, weapons, or sexual harassment.
Just call from a touch-tone phone to 1-800-4-1-VOICE, ext. 359 (418-6423) to leave your information. Or TEXT: 614-426-0240 Then type: TIPS Your message will not be traced, and you will not be identified. The Safe School Helpline® team will transcribe and fax your message to school officials, so appropriate action can be taken.
Thank you for your continued support to provide a better education for all Otsego students.
