HMS Media Center Update
Wow!
It has been a great start to the school year as I begin teaching and learning in the HMS media center. The parent volunteers are incredible, and the teachers and students are simply amazing! Thank you to all for your support!

If You Like...You May Like...
Much like Amazon, this display provides other books students may enjoy if they like a particular book or series.
What We've Been Learning
During the month of September we:
- Learned about how the resources in the media center are organized
- Discussed rules for discussions, book care, and other library routines
- Participated in conversations about fiction and nonfiction texts
- Took an online "Superhero Reading Survey" to determine what types of books we might enjoy reading
- Engaged in a library scavenger hunt to practice using the library catalog and the organization of library resources
- Discussed RI Children's Book Award nominees
- Checked out the features of our two library websites
- Began research projects with grade four teachers

Looking Ahead
In October I plan to work with fifth grade classes on research as well. I am working with Mrs. Burke and Mrs. Cunningham to introduce citations to their students. I am happy to work with your classes too. I will be in touch to make sure I rotate all classrooms in during our research blocks.
I am also happy to prepare lessons on particular genres if you are doing monthly book talks. So far I have a class choosing series books and a class choosing mystery books. Just let me know what your needs are.
Feel free to send students down to the library to return or choose new books during our "Open Library" block from 3:10-3:20 each day. Also, I'm always happy to see students returning or choosing books before the school day begins.
Please let me know if there is anything we can collaborate on together!
EXCITING NEWS!!!!
Dan Santat, last year's RI Children's Book Award winner for Sidekicks, is visiting Hampden Meadows on Thursday, October 17th. He will meet in the afternoon with grade 4 and grade 5 at two different assemblies in the cafeteria. Barrington Books will have extra copies of his books if children would like to purchase them. Dan Santat will be at the Rhode Island Children's Book Festival on Saturday, October 19th for book signing. We are so lucky to have a PTO that supports special events such as this one!
