Principal's Note
Hidden River Families,
School safety is very important to the staff and students at Hidden River Middle School.
Your partnership with us is also very critical to school safety. We know that students go home and talk about their day with families. Sometimes, parents see their student’s social media accounts and/or overhear students on their technology.
It is important for students and parents to reach out to school administration when your student comes home reporting things of concern. We have seen an increase in social media bullying, inappropriate social media posts and threats. We take each one seriously. We investigate immediately and communicate with our district Office of Security and Emergency Management and the parents of students involved. If necessary we use three different safety procedures, as a school we review and practice them regularly. Below are the three if you would like to talk to your student more about the safety procedures and their purposes.
- Hold in Place - Used to stop movement inside the building without activating a lockdown or lockout (i.e. medical emergency)
- Lockout - Used to isolate all students and staff from danger, harm or risk from outside of the building
- Lockdown - Used to isolate all students and staff from danger, harm or risk from inside of the building
Other than our Facebook page and Twitter account, it should be noted that there are NO sanctioned Hidden River Middle School social media accounts (snapchat, Instagram, TikTok etc.).
We are seeing many students with cell phones, struggling to put them away during class and on social media sites. This is consuming a lot of adult time redirecting them to put them away. We are hoping parents can help remind their student that phones are off and away during class.
We have had several parents reach out with to us with concerns they learned about from their student or their student’s social media accounts. Thank you. The communication is very helpful to us maintaining a safe school environment.
Finally, on Thursday, February 23, our FSO is having a Guest Speaker on the topic of teens and screen time. We hope you can join us to learn more about supporting your middle school student in this era of technology and social media.
In Partnership,
Teresa Vibar
