Fabulous Fourth Grade
August 21, 2015
Great First Week!
1. Spelling - They are coming home with their spelling list. Each child has 10 spelling words weekly. They will come home with their NEW list on Fridays and take their test the following Friday. EACH CHILD HAS THEIR OWN, INDIVIDUALIZED SPELLING LIST. In my class, we take a pretest of fourth grade words. The first 10 words they missed become their spelling list for the following week. If they did not miss 10 words, I test them on 5th grade words. If they still need more words to complete their 10 word list, we may move onto 6th grade words!
They will input those 10 words into Spelling City and will be able to work with those words all week. You can ALSO access Spelling City from home. The log-in instructions are coming home today.
2. Word a Day words: We have four vocabulary words each week. Like spelling, they get their words on Friday and are tested the following Friday. They do NOT need to know how to spell these words, or even define them. They need to be able to use the word properly in a sentence, and know the part of speech for each word (noun, verb, etc.) Discussing these words at home will help, especially for the more difficult words.
The words for this week are: conceal, permanent, compete and treacherous. Their worksheet should stay in their blue take-home folder until they complete it, and then it is due by Friday.
3. They begin their Counselor lessons on Monday. They go to the counselor as a group for 30 minutes. Ms. Blanchette is wonderful! If you feel your child could benefit from chatting with Ms. Blanchette one-on-one, I have a counselor permission form I can send home.
Reading ... "So what's the deal?"
I expect each child to read 30 minutes nightly. While I do not pile on unnecessary homework / busy work, I do expect them to read nightly. They may also have a short math homework page, but reading is what is always expected. Thank you for your support with this!
Planners
The planners cost the school $2 each, so if you can send that in, that would be great. I will send out a note next week as a reminder.
REMIND and HOMEROOM
Also, please sign up for "Homeroom". I post pictures (almost daily) of students. Because it is an exclusive group (you need the invite code), it is safe and not public. If you share the code with a grandparent or other family member, let me now so I don't block them.
Got Headphones or Ear Buds?
Wish List
- Plain Cheerios (or generic). I keep a container of these in the classroom for kids who do not have a snack.
- 4 ounce dixie cups (for the Cheerios).
These items are always needed. Thank you so much!
