Time for the Talent Show Auditions!
Sycamore's Annual Talent Show gives students the chance to share their talents with an audience of friends and family. All students can participate. In fact, we are looking for both Talent Show acts as well as a few upper grade students who will help as MCs. All participants need only to complete a parent permission slip and participate in an “audition” on February 18 or 19 to ensure their performance is well-planned and appropriate for our young audience. The Talent Show permission slip is attached to this week's Blackboard email and is available in the school office.
The Talent Show will be held on Sunday, February 23 from 1:00-3:30 PM. The event is not only a delightful event highlighting talent, creativity and courage, it is a family friendly fundraiser for our 6th graders’ trip to Outdoor Science School (OSS). Tickets are $5 each. They are available in the office starting Wednesday February 19 and on the day of the event. This year's Talent Show will NOT include lunch as it has in past years. Instead, we will have snacks and drinks for sale while we watch the show. All funds from ticket prices and the snack bar will go to OSS.
Lockdown Drill on February 20
Throughout the year, students and staff practice all aspects of our school’s emergency plans including fire drills, earthquake drills and lockdown procedures. On February 20, we will practice a lockdown drill when children are outside at recess. Lockdown procedures allow our school to respond to a campus-based threat or an emergency near our site. As we tell our students, reasons for lockdown can vary. Most commonly, these procedures secure students while we gather a loose dog on campus or as a precaution while police take action in the area. We describe them as opportunities for students and adults to practice getting to a save spot until given more information.
To initiate a lockdown, students hear a unique bell and announcement. Students and staff move to a place where they are out of sight and safe from the danger they can see or hear. All classroom doors lock from the inside, and because staff and the Claremont Police Department have keys to our site, students remain in place until an announcement lifts the lockdown or their room is cleared by someone with a key.
We have already practiced our lockdown drill twice this year, but we want to approach each practice sensitively. Please contact your child's teacher or Mrs. Stanger if you would like to talk more about this drill or your child's needs as they practice the drill on the 20th.
The César E. Chávez Memorial Education Awards Program
The César E. Chávez Memorial Education Awards Program is presented annually by Claremont Faculty Association, in association with the California Teachers Association. The program provides recognition for students who demonstrate an understanding of the vision and one or more of the principles of César E. Chávez's legacy. Written essays and visual arts entires will be accepted for students of all ages. The entry form (attached to the Blackboard email and available in the school office) provides detail on the parameters for projects. All entries require a completed entry form with parent signature. They are due in the school office by February 21, 2020.
