Shelby Necessary Runs Towards Greatness
Thirty Weatherford College Upward Bound students participated in the recent BNSF Railways Technology Day where Elaina Puente won third place prizes in a STEAM essay contest focused on the importance of including the arts in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields of study.
In addition to the essay contest, Upward Bound students partook in workshops ranging from financial literacy to piloting drones. GISD students Tori Kelleher and Logan Lantrip participated.
βBNSF is proud to host Technology Awareness Day to encourage area high-school aged students to explore career opportunities available through technology,β said Lena Kent, BNSFβs director of public affairs. βThrough a wide range of presentations and hands-on activities, we hope to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering and math.β
The WC Upward Bound program is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education and supports Springtown, Mineral Wells, Millsap and Gordon high schools and welcomes participation by interested individuals regardless of race, national origin, gender or disability.
βAll those involved in todayβs activities are tomorrow leaders and innovators,β said Jeff Kahlden, WC Upward Bound director. βWeatherford College Upward Bound is grateful for the educational opportunities provided by BNSF Railway. Todayβs students drive the world toward known and unknown possibilities, exploring opportunities and jobs that donβt currently exist.
Congrats to OAP for advancing to the bi-district competion on March 23rd at Cisco Junior College.
