News & Notes
EVERYONE: Please remind students that reading makes you smarter and kinder.
"Novel reading is a great way to practice being human."
7th Grade Science classes have been researching geological time periods to create brochures that are being presented to their peers. We provided them with print resources to help meet their research needs. Let us know if you need books pulled for your classes!
The Book Swap & Sale was a modest success with about a dozen students bringing in books to swap for "new" reads. We were also able to donate discarded books to several teachers who expressed interest in building up their classroom libraries.
The Reading Marathon is reaching the 3/4 mark next week. Students and staff are welcome to pop in to show off their completed reading lists, collect a small treat, and enter a raffle. The finish line will be 16th-20th and the party will take place after April vacation.
Mark your calendars and start saving your dollars: The Annual Scholastic BOGO Book Fair will be held from Monday, May 21-Friday, May 25th. More info. to come.

Using Technology to Teach: HyperDocs and Padlet
What is a HyperDoc?!
"HyperDocs, a transformative, interactive Google Doc replacing the worksheet method of delivering instruction, is the ultimate change agent in the blended learning classroom. With strong educational philosophies built into each one, HyperDocs have the potential to shift the way you instruct with technology. They are created by teachers and given to students to engage, educate, and inspire learning. It’s not about teaching technology, it’s about using the technology to TEACH."

Helping Students Grieve
According to the article, "In a 2012 survey, the American Federation of Teachers found that 92 percent of school staff members surveyed agreed that childhood loss and grief is a serious problem that requires more focus and resources to prevent mental health problems with potentially serious consequences. Yet only 7 percent of the educators surveyed had received training in identifying vulnerable students and how to respond. The report concluded that there was an "endemic lack of training," but an "overwhelming interest" among educators in doing more for grieving students."
As they say, knowledge is power.
I have a copy Educational Leadership magazine in my office. The entire issue is dedicated to mental health in schools. Let me know if you are interested in borrowing it.

Grolier Encyclopedia - With increased use of Chromebooks every classroom, don’t forget the amazing resources we pay for, including our online encyclopedia. Remind kids to use it….or even require kids to use it. In my experience in the library, once they are familiar with it, kids like it because it is written at their level and often answers their questions in one place.
There are many reasons to use this resource, and here are a few from the Grolier people (highlighting is mine):
