Mental Health Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Did you know...?
- 1 in 5 U.S adults report that the pandemic had a significant negative impact on their mental health
- 1 in 15 U.S adults experienced both a substance use disorder and mental illness
Among U.S. ADOLESCENTS (aged 12-17):
- 1 in 6 experienced a major depressive episode (MDE)
- 3 million had serious thoughts of suicide
- 31% increase in mental health-related emergency department visits
Among U.S. YOUNG ADULTS (aged 18-25):
- 1 in 3 experienced a mental illness
- 1 in 10 experienced a serious mental illness
- 3.8 million had serious thoughts of suicide
- 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24
- Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-34
The average delay between onset of mental illness symptoms and treatment is 11 years
Can you imagine living with a broken bone or with diabetes for 11 years before seeking treatment? We have to change the way our society views mental illness if we want to help people recover. Because RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE with the right support!
