Dear HMS Families,

With one more week until winter break, our students are working hard and are engaging in exciting things to end this calendar year. This week in ELA our fifth graders have been working on suspense stories and book trailers, and our sixth graders had fun with their "Rumble" in ELA to celebrate the culmination of The Outsiders.

Next week we are looking forward to our annual pre-winter break Spirit Week! Print out the list and post it somewhere convenient...we can't wait to see the creativity and fun our students bring to school!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Kelly, Linda, and Susie

It's Getting Cold Out There!

Please remind your child to dress for the weather on a daily basis, as the weather is getting colder! Students will be going outside for PE and recess as long as the temperature and weather is agreeable, and we would like them to have coats, hats, gloves, scarves, and anything that they need to keep warm! Thanks for helping to keep them bundled!

Please see this letter regarding the roller skating unit set to begin in the new year in HMS PE classes. The letter shares information about that unit, as well as other options available for students not wanting to do roller skating.

If your child is riding his or her bike to and from school, and crosses through the Hunter and Illinois intersection, or rides on the path next to school, please have a conversation with them about riding safely, and being aware of their surroundings. We are seeing students rush across the street on their bikes and take up most of the path and sidewalks as they ride. Unfortunately this has caused situations where walking students have been hit or nearly hit by their peers who are riding bikes. In order to keep all of our HMS HAWKS safe, please have an important conversation with your bike rider today about sharing the road with our walkers and ensuring they have the right of way on the sidewalks. Thanks for your help in this effort!

Our math teachers have developed a list of resources that your child can use at home to practice their learning in math. These are great for additional support, extra practice on night when there is no homework, or over winter break when they need something to do to engage!

Our next parent education event is NEXT Wednesday, December 15th at 11am. It is titled Making Room for Ambivalence/Sadness and Silver Linings of COVID. Please Register Here.

**NEW**There are multiple ways to participate - onsite at the district office, live over Zoom, or watch the recording on our YouTube channel. We look forward to seeing you next month!

COVID Safety Precautions

New Trier Township, like much of the rest of the country, has experienced an increase in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks. We encourage all students and families to continue to carefully monitor symptoms and to take advantage of free COVID testing options. For additional information, families are encouraged to review our updated D39 Response to Illness Booklet, the CCDPH list of COVID-19 symptoms, and the D39 COVID-19 Testing Page.

SHIELD Testing Continues

Thank you to all who are participating in the SHIELD Illinois testing program which allows the district to offer free COVID-19 PCR testing. SHIELD testing is available at Wilmette Junior High School on Tuesdays and Thursday from 3:30-6:30 pm and on Saturdays from 8:00-11:00 am. Anyone who has registered for the program is welcome to access testing. During winter break, we are pleased to continue to offer SHIELD testing on a limited schedule. SHIELD testing will be available during winter break on Tuesday, Dec. 21 and Tuesday, Dec. 28 from 3:30-6:30 pm at Wilmette Junior High School. Please note that processing times may be impacted by the holiday.

Travel Guidelines from CCDPH

With winter break approaching, all families should remain apprised of the regular updates provided by the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) regarding travel restrictions. Families are expected to review and follow these guidelines. D39 COVID-19 Testing Page offers a variety of options for testing. Regardless of vaccination status, anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 must stay home from school, isolate and seek testing. Thank you for helping us maintain a healthy, in-person school environment for students and staff.

Student Vaccination Submission

With children in the 5-11 age group continuing to receive their COVID-19 vaccine, we encourage families to upload their child(ren)’s vaccination card via PowerSchool. Instructions were sent out in an email titled “Student COVID Vaccine Information” on Monday, Nov. 29. With more students becoming eligible for vaccination, we anticipate a review of health and safety protocols in January.

Cold Weather Preparations

As the last week has shown, colder weather is upon us! Please help your children prepare their clothing so that they can comfortably and safely enjoy outdoor experiences and play. Students go outside for recess daily and are also outdoors during other portions of their day, unless extreme weather prevents this. To help keep our students safe and able to fully enjoy their outdoor time, students are encouraged to dress warmly. Hats, gloves, winter coats, snow pants and boots are strongly encouraged. In addition, information regarding the district’s plans and procedures for extreme weather and weather related school closure preparedness can be found here. Although we always try to avoid cancelling school due to severe weather, the health and safety of students and staff are a priority.
