Staff Keeps Working Through Busy Winter Months, by Mrs. Blackwelder and Mrs. Register

What a crazy few weeks we have had! Our newspaper staff missed quite a few meetings in January, due to the Hour of Code, MLK Day holiday, and some unexpected snow days. However, they have kept their focus and worked really hard to put together a double issue of our paper this month! We are excited to bring you a variety of news, podcasts, opinions, and so much more!

Technology at FES, by Hannah M.

There are many ways to use technology. At Fairforest, we can use the boards, computers, and board pens. In the mornings, I use computers in my class to play Reflex Math and Spelling City. I’m also doing Powtoons, and you could make videos with it. Did you know every class from kindergarten all the way up to 5th grade uses technology in many different ways? The 3rd grade uses the computers to do math and spelling games. I do racing games, penguin jump, and many other games to practice math. On spelling city I practice my spelling words. Kindergarteners are doing bee bots and are learning to go onto its learning and get on activities. The 1st grade does keyboarding and are learning about seeds. 2nd graders are learning about even and old numbers with bee bots. 3rd graders also are doing Minecraft. I learning how to do it and I loved it. Did you now Miss Time’s class made a colony in Minecraft? Finely 5th grade has been doing and research on inventors. If we didn’t have technology we wouldn’t have learned as much as this.

Spelling Bee Interview, by Julia E.Y.

I’ve known the Spelling Bee winner (Andrianna) for a while now she’s in my classroom and one of my greatest friends. We were all really happy when she won. All of us congratulated her for trying really hard and winning. I decided to give her an interview (Q & A) for those who don’t know her or don’t know what it feels like to be in a Spelling Bee. It was really fun giving this interview, I also learned some of her thoughts and questions she had before it started.

Questions I asked~

What did you feel when you won?

Answer-

“I was really happy it was kind of a relief after I finished.”

Would you do it all over again? Why?

Answer-

“No, I wouldn’t because I would be afraid of spelling a word the incorrect way.”

What were you feeling before it started?

Answer-

“I was really nervous about it.”

Did you think you would win?

Answer-

“No because at the end I was only left with Alana and I wasn’t sure who would win.”

New Year's Resolution, by Rebecca R.

What are your resolutions for 2016? I am going to sit less, exercise, and try to lose weight.

First, I am going to not sit a lot. I will think about people who stand at work and barely sit. Think about your small intestines that are crushed when you sit. When you stand your intestines are the way they are supposed to be.

Next, I will exercise. You can think about people who run a track and people who run the cross country race.

Last, I will try to lose weight. I can think about the way I eat. I can eat less like eat two meals a day and a snack or eat the serving size, like am supposed to do .

If you have resolutions you should do them. If you try you can reach your goal.

Snow Days, by Hannah C.

Did you play in the snow last week? I know I did. I played in the snow with my baby brother, older sister, my mom, cousin Jessie, and family friend Bill. I love snow because we don’t have to come to school. We don’t have to come to school because the roads are ice and so we get days called snow days. When we were inside we watched movies and drank hot cocoa. When we were outside we tried to snow board……and we all failed. Snowboarding looks easy but it’s not that easy.

Do you like Valentine’s Day? Valentines is a day were love is shown. Love can be between family and friends. Friends are at school with you and at sleepovers and things like that. Family is with you every day of your life. Show love to your friends but mostly to your family. That’s what this day is all

Circuits, By Amaya J.

In 4th grade we have been learning about different thing in science. Our teacher [Mrs. West] and the other 4th grade teachers have thought of doing something like pumpkin palooza. By the way pumpkin palooza was an activity for us and there was an activity in every 4th grade class, but it wasn’t just for fun, because we were learning how much they weighed and how much seed are in the small pumpkin and the big pumpkin.

So now all of 4th grade teachers had prepared this for us again but kind of for science. Now Mrs. West’s is going to be doing sound, Mrs. Reed’s is doing circuits, Mrs. Timms is going to be doing also sound, Mrs. Harmon was doing Thomas Edison’s eardrum, and last but not least Mrs. Brown was also doing circuits. To make a light bulb to light up, you need to make sure that you have a closed circuit. But you can’t do it all yourself you are going to need some help by a friend or an adult. But always make sure when you are doing it you have adult supervision. Have fun while doing it, but also make sure you are safe.

Quotes by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by Anna Kate S.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.”

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

“Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

‘I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.”

“In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

“We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”

“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.’

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

These are some of the quotes of Martin Luther King .jr has said. It’s your choice to agree or disagree.

Girls' Book Club, By Julia E.Y.

Just about two weeks ago we finished girl’s book club with Dr.Ballard. It was an amazing and fun adventure reading the book we choose. Many of us voted on reading “Flora and Ulysses” by Kate DiCamillo. The book was a higher level than some of the girls in our book club. So, when we found a word we couldn’t pronounce or didn’t know the meaning of we worked together on making inferences what it could mean. Dr.Ballard would tell us what it means or we would look in the dictionary. When we were reading we would each take turn being one of the characters or being the narrator. In the beginning of each meet we would discuss our questions, our favorite parts and connections we had while reading our assigned chapters. It was a great experience reading the book with the rest of the girls. I hope that the boys book club will have an amazing experience as well.

Dear Ruby: Valentines and Friendship

Dear Ruby I like a boy in Children’s Choir but there’s another boy in Ardency {P.S To all my readers who don’t know what Ardency is its Horizons.} And he likes me but I don’t like him what do I do?!

Signed R.

Well R. I would say that let the other guy that you DON’T Like and let him down easy and say “Let’s just be friends.” A boy doesn’t have to be your boyfriend but he can be your friend.

Signing off: Ruby.

Dear Ruby, my friend is spreading rumors about me and my friends want it to stop. I want her to back off. She is in my dance class.

Your friend, M.

Well M. I am saying this from deep into my heart, JUST TALK TO HER!! I mean seriously, I have gotten things like this before and handled it but I HATE when people act like this. They crush your dreams and eat your soul. Oh did I put on too much? Yeah, so just talk to her and everything will go back to normal after that.

Signing off, Ruby.

Breaking News, by Alex B.

There was Trouble in Paris on the 13th of November as terrorist took over a movie theater and held everyone inside hostage. They say more than 100 people dead. This breaking news is a little more recent. A shooting at a party in California on December 2nd . There were three shooters two have been identified as male and female the other shooter has not been identified. Now I’m going to talk about something that occurred in the 1990s. A sound called the bloop. They say the bloop was made by an ice burg sliding into the ocean but what ice burg do we know an ice burg big enough to fall into the ocean and this time they say that it is definitely not an ice burg they are saying that there is an underwater sea creature about 36 times bigger than the largest animal we know, the blue whale. If you want to know more about the bloop look it up on you tube but most of the videos play the sound 16 times faster but if you find one that is normal speed it’s much more creepier. Well thanks for reading my article and please comment on it.

Birthday Countdown, by Angel V.C.

In two weeks my birthday will come in March the 1st.My little brother said he’s going to buy me Legos for me to build or for our PS4. But what I want most is for my ipad2 to be fixed after it broke. For some reason I don’t know who broke it plus the screen is taking off, but I hope that this year it will be fixed. My mom said she will buy me a computer but I told her I want my ipad2 fixed just to save her money she even said that my birthday party will be with my little sister’s birthday party. Ever since she was born we have celebrated our birthdays together and it’s really fun to. Hope this is the best one yet.

To be continued…

All right only 4 more days until my birthday and I’m really excited. Right now I’m 10 and soon I’ll be 11. The gift I want most is to fix my ipad2 like I said before, but the next thing that I want is games for my PS4 and there is one that I had my eye on for a while called “WWE 2K”. And I’ve seen people play it on YouTube and it is really cool it’s got one of my favorite people “The Ultimate Warrior”. It’s so cool that I’m trying to save up my money to buy it or someone might get for me as a present and I will be celebrating with my sister.
