A Note from Mrs. Smith
*A Job Well Done at the Talent Show!
* We will have a math test Friday, April 5th. A review will be sent home on Wednesday, but the test will be on multiplication and division. It will include things such as number stories and using parentheses in math problems.
* Our Lenape field trip to Churchville, PA is coming up on April 16th. More info to come, but we'll need to dress comfortably because it is an outdoor trip. Our field trip is the same day as our April community meeting. Therefore, third graders will receive their awards at the May community meeting.
* We are running low on dry erase markers. Any donations will help us continue to use this learning tool through the end of the year. Thank you in advance!
Writing
By Andy and Riley
This week in writing we are working on persuading people. We started and pretty much finished our opinion entries. For our entries we wrote about, problems and solutions and noteworthy people. We made about 5 entries. Then, we picked one entry that we will develop into a speech. We also wrote a speech to Mr.B convincing him to have extra recess during PARCC week and then we recorded it.
Reading
By Talia and Avery
This week in reading we did a lot of fun things!! The first thing we did was we started book clubs. In our book clubs we chose books with the people in our group. Every day we will meet with our book club and and make a goal for the day. Then we split up and read our books. You read until you get to the point where your group decided to stop. While you’re reading you jot down facts about the character. Another thing we did in reading was we read Because of Winn Dixie. Also, last week we started talking about theories. Theories are your idea on who the character is. First, you take a character and think about a character trait you use to describe the character. For example, in Because of Winn Dixie we said the main character Opal is big hearted. The theory was, Opal is the kind of person who opens her heart to everyone. Then we related our thinking to icebergs. The theory was only the part of the iceberg that is above the water. We still need to dig deeper to find the part of the iceberg that’s below the water. We need to ask the question, Why? Why does Opal open her heart to everyone? So as you can see we had a very busy week in Reading.
Math
By Blaise and John William
This week in math we learned algebra, the order of operations, parentheses, and lots more! The order of operation is PEMDAS; P is parentheses, E is exponents, M is multiplication, D is division, A is addition, and S is subtraction. There is one other way to remember by this sentence “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.” The Please is Parentheses, the Excuse is exponents, the My is multiplication, Dear is division, Aunt is addition, and Sally is subtraction. Parentheses are very important in a number model. They are important because in a number model with three or more numbers if you put parentheses in a certain spot it changes the whole problem. Example:
(5 x 10) - 7 = 43 5 x (10 - 7) = 15.
Now that you know a lot about order of operations and you can learn more about algebra next time we make a smore!

Science
By Liam and Emleyn
This week in science we did some pretty cool stuff. For Example, we took apart owl pellets and found bones of a rodent. An owl pellet is when a owl eats a rat or a rodent then it spits the bones and fur later. First we split into groups of 2. Next, we started to carefully take apart the owl pellets. Then we started to find bones, we found bones like the skull bone but most of the bones were broken. Then after we found the bones we placed them on the rodents skeleton diagram. Most people did not complete their skeleton. Only one person did complete the rodent skeleton. After we finished we had a choice of bringing the bones home or throwing them out. Most of the boys kept them but the girls threw them out. We did a lot of fun things this week but this one by far was our class’s favorite.
