Jackson: Is He with or Against Us?
About our President, Andrew Jackson
The Nullification Crisis
Jackson put a tariff on imported goods. But since the south depended on imported goods, Jackson just seemed to raise their style of living. Upset with this, South Carolina chose to ignore or nullify this tariff, upsetting Jackson and the government. Because the government refused to take away the tariff, South Carolina threatened to secede. The supreme court then chose to give Jackson the power to force South Carolina to pay the tariff, telling him to use the Army if necessary. South Carolina ended up paying the Tariff but at a reduced price.
"Trail of Tears"
This is the 'trail' the Cherokees had to travel on because of the removal law that Jackson announced. There was a lot of death on that trail. People died from disease, weather, and general conditions. The settlers that were in Georgia wanted their land because of the resources and gold that was thought to be there.
Killing the National Bank
In an effort to win another election to enter his second term. He did succeed to his second term and he did 'kill' the national bank. Many people were happy, but what they didn't realize was that after the Articles of Confederation, it was the National Bank that helped get the country back on track because the state banks wasn't working well. Once the National Bank was gone, a depression started, all because by Jackson.
Letter # 1, Positive
We Americans support Jackson wholly and fully. He has removed the savage Indians from they're land that they were not using to its full potential. Once he removed them, it allowed us to bring in gold and good resources, and for that we are grateful. On another note, Jackson also removed the National bank. We, the ordinary people, believe that the national bank was only meant for the wealthy to benefit from.
-Sincerely, the Americans of this beautiful country
Letter # 2, Negative
Please let Mr. Jackson know that we will not support for the wrongdoings he has committed. When he announced that there would be a tariff, we were very distressed. Why? Because he just raised the price of out living standards! On top of that, he made those poor Indians move, and many died along the way. He has caused much grief.
-Sincerely, the Americans of this beautiful country
