Congratulations to Akira Dhundia, Swaha Patel, Seerat Kaur, Ujjwal Jha, Kellan Corley, & Jonathan Braverman from Quarry Hill, along with Divisha Pehlajani from Afton and coach Karan Dhundia on this outstanding accomplishment. The team's win at Worlds wraps up another highly successful Odyssey of the Mind season in Pennsbury.
The POMA Board is excited to continue our efforts to start another season in the Fall, and if you are interested in learning more or getting involved in Odyssey of the Mind, please visit www.pennsburyom.com or contact the POMA Board at pennsburyom@gmail.com.
About Odyssey of the Mind:
Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving program involving students from kindergarten through college. Team members work together at length to solve a predefined long-term problem and present their solution to the problem at a competition. They must also participate in the spontaneous portion of the competition by generating solutions to a problem they have not seen before. While the long-term problem solution often takes many months to complete and involves various elements of theatrical performance, construction, and design, the spontaneous portion occurs on the day of the competition.
Making New Friends!
Fifth-grade students from Fallsington, Edgewood, and Manor Elementary Schools gathered at Core Creek Park on Tuesday, May 30 for the Charles Boehm Mixer. The day, filled with fun activites, was a great way to meet new friends ahead of their big move to middle school next school year.
Oxford Valley Green Team in Action!
Earlier this week, Green Team students at Oxford Valley Elementary School participated in a flower -planting activity to beautify the space around their school's sign.
"The landscaping area inside the surrounding retaining wall had been dug out and empty for a while, so we wanted to plant some flowers to brighten things up a little!" shared Green Team Advisor and Gifted Support Teacher Sherri Cohoon.
Students met before school with their gloves and shovels ready to go and worked hard to get the job done. Oxford Valley's sign looks welcoming and beautiful. Great job, OV Green Team!

Well I'll Bee!
On Wednesday, May 31, the third grade students of Quarry Hill Elementary School were abuzz with excitement. Julie Reed, a Hybrid STEM Educator from the Planet Bee Foundation, visited and gave an educational presentation about bees.
Students learned about why bees are important for the world, what a queen bee is, how bees pollinate, why bees create honeycombs in the shape of a hexagon, and more! Then, everyone had the opportunity to look up close at some real live bees Ms. Reed had brought with her.
Finally, students went outside and had the opportunity to hold native mason bees fresh out of their nesting tubes. Female mason bees lay their eggs in nesting tubes, where they hatch into larvae and become cocoons until they emerge as adult bees! Students helped wake the bees from their hibernation by gently rubbing their cocoon back and forth with their fingers.
The Planet Bee Foundation provides programs at no cost to schools with the mission of changing the world one bee and one mind at a time. They teach about the importance of bees as a pathway to STEM, conservation, and innovations in agriculture, cultivating the green leaders of tomorrow through the power of science and stewardship.
Thank you to Julie Reed and Quarry Hill SPARK teacher Rebecca Obert-Thorn for making this presentation possible.
First Grade Poetry Gala at Walt Disney

Are You Telling the Truth?
Students enrolled in Biology 2 at Pennsbury High School recently learned the science behind polygraph exams.
Bucks County detectives Timothy Perkins and Brian Rimple spoke to students about polygraphs, the physiological responses they record, and how the machines are used in the field of forensics and criminal justice.
They explained what the various lines on a polygraph test measure. The green line measures the Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), or sweat levels; the thick red line tracks blood volume, measured by a blood pressure cuff; and the blue line tracks respiratory rate. Control questions are asked to set a baseline, followed by questions relevant to the examination, which are compared to the baseline questions. A significant change like a faster heart rate, higher blood pressure, or increased perspiration indicates that the person is lying. As trained polygraph examiners, it's the detectives' job to analyze the different physiological responses seen on the polygraph to determine whether someone is telling the truth.
