First half of the semester

Wow! Where does the time go?! As you probably know, Units 1-4 closed permanently this past Friday night (March 24). I am currently finishing grading all work submitted this past Friday. Grades will be updated by Tuesday morning (March 28). I so appreciate parent support in getting students to complete and submit assignments!

FYI... Beginning Fall 2016, NCVPS will no longer report two grading period averages for students. Instead, NCVPS will report cumulative progress reports every two weeks. At the end of the semester, we will report a Final Course Work grade.

Now, our weighted grades will look like this:

  • Final Course Work Grade: 75%
  • Final Exam/Project: 25%

As always, schools may recalculate grades if the district policy has different weights for the final exams. Please speak with your student, have them show you his/her current average and encourage him/her to set goals and strive to do even better for the rest of the semester!

What is due this week?

We are working on Week 10, continuing with Unit 5, La Tecnología, working on lessons 3 & 4. (Lessons 1 & 2 should have already been submitted this past Friday, March 24 in order to stay on pace with the class.)

Below is a list of this week's 8 assignments (due by Friday, March 31 @ 11:55pm).

Students have one more opportunity to attend an RLC for Unit 5, tomorrow, Tuesday, March 28 @ 1pm. If a student has been unable to attend an RLC for Unit 5 and cannot attend tomorrow's RLC, click here for the link to my recorded session of Unit 5.

Please note that I cannot give grades in an email or text but will be glad to speak with you on the phone about your student's grade. I encourage you to enroll in our class as a CANVAS observer. As a CANVAS observer, you can see the daily announcements, read the feedback for your child's assignments and see his/her grades. (Keep in mind that I cannot enroll you in our class as I do not have your student's login information.)

Parents and facilitators can now download the Canvas Parent app in both the iTunes and Google Play stores

Parents and facilitators will need student login information to set up their parent accounts. This will have to come from the school. NCVPS cannot supply login credentials to parents or facilitators. Check with your school's e-learning advisor (ELA).

The Canvas Parent app is designed to provide visibility into a student's progress at a glance. Canvas Parent allows both parents and facilitators to:

  • View assignment descriptions and due dates
  • Set reminders for assignments
  • View assignment grades
  • View course grades
  • Set grade alerts
  • View course announcements

Parents and facilitators can also use the Parent Portal online. Directions on how to use the portal are here.

Students have 3 upcoming Culture Cafe sessions they can attend in the next few weeks. Students can go to their Home page on Canvas and click on the icon, The Culture Cafe for a detailed lists of future Culture Cafe sessions and how to log into the session. After attending a Culture Cafe session, students will complete a reflection about the class and submit it for extra credit.

Peer Tutor Center

As we move on through the semester, I want to encourage your student to try the Peer Tutor Center! The PTC is a great resource available with students waiting to help or tutor your student or be a Virtual Buddy for your student. Peer Tutoring is for students needing specific content support while a Virtual Buddy is for students that need extra guidance through the course.
