Fernwood Spelling Bee
The 2022 Fernwood Avenue Middle School Spelling Bee was held on Tuesday in the auditorium. The bee lasted a record 57 rounds! The final two spellers, eighth grader Rishan Rashed and sixth grader Shreevas Arunprasad, went back and forth for an unbelievable 45 rounds before Rishan was ultimately declared the champion. Third place went to 6th grader Lauren Do and fourth place was Tammy Le, an eighth grader.
Some of the words that Rishan spelled correctly included: transept, brocade, fortuitous, throes, mien, poultice, coracle, d'orsay, refectory, Kaddish, Arapaho, Quasimodo, bivouac, ziggurat, allee, linsey-woolsey, and Chelonia
Rishan will next be representing Fernwood and EHT at the South Jersey Spelling Bee on March 12th against other school champions from throughout South Jersey. Good luck, Rishan… we’re sure you’ll do an amazing job representing Fernwood. Congratulations to all of our competitors today on an impressive display of spelling.
All South Jersey Jr. High Band
Congratulations to the Fernwood MS students who successfully auditioned for the All-South Jersey Jr. High Band!
Honors French
To work on our unit on physical and personality descriptions of people, family vocabulary, and more, Honors
8 French students worked together to form a paragraph each about one of their pod teachers. It was a fun way for the students to work on collaboration, proofreading, and writing a fluid paragraph. While it was a timed activity, the students rallied together to successfully read their paragraphs to Madame in the allotted time! Awesome job to all!

Girls Basketball
On Tuesday, the Girl’s Basketball team defeated Davies with a score of 28-18. After a slow start, the girls pulled together during the second half and dominated the remainder of the game. The offense was equally distributed by all of the girls. Sam Battersby, Taison Parker, and Kayden Senior battled hard under the boards for some great rebounds. Mariah Newman, Caitlin Harding, and Katie Colella worked together up top to keep Davies’ shooters from attacking and scoring.
During the 10 minute game, an aggressive 1-3-1 defense and incredible passing on the offensive end led to another victory for the night. Amazing job by Katie Colella, Christina Massey, Kayli McNulty, Caroline O’Donnell, Cristal Nunez, Layla Wallace, and Jamie Decker.
On Wednesday, the Girl’s Basketball team lost a tough one in the last minute to Middle with a score of 29-24. In a very physical game, the girl’s repeatedly beat Middle’s full court press with all girls scoring. Mariah Newman and Taison Parker stepped up to guard Middle’s two most offensive-minded players while Sam Battersby and Kayden Senior handled the rebounds. Caitlin Harding, Katie Colella, and Caroline O’Donnell did a great job pressuring up top, making sure no quick drives happened. Although it was a hard fought game, it just didn’t end in our favor.
The Girl's Basketball team beat Alder in our 8th Grade Night at the High School with a score of 22-13. Taison Parker and Sam Battersby lead the girls in scoring with nine and six points respectively. Mariah Newman drained a beautiful 3 pointer at a crucial moment in the game to get our momentum going. Katie Colella also added a basket at a great point to keep our run strong.
A wonderful passing game by Kayden Senior and Caroline O'Donnell helped lead us to these baskets. Tough defense by Christina Massey and Layla Wallace helped to stop drives to the basket and outside shots for Alder.
And, a shout out must be made to Elli Morris, our 8th grade manager! She has helped keep our spirits high and scorebook accurate all season long!
We still have a few more weeks left in our season, but it was a fabulous night to celebrate our 8th graders and wish them luck as they go on to high school!

COMMUNITY PRIDE
Spreading the Love
Ms. Fessman's Burgundy 2 students learned that giving back to the community can be rewarding! During tutorial, students "adopted" senior citizens from a nursing home and made them personal Valentine's Day cards to make them feel special. They also created thank you cards for members of the guidance department to express their appreciation for all that they do every day to help, support, and encourage all of Fernwood's students. Happy School Counseling Week!
